What caused the Spanish blackout?

On April 16 Spain’s grid ran on 100% renewable energy for the first time.

Today it declared a state of emergency following a nation wide blackout.

Power is thankfully being restored this evening, after an exceptional grid failure.

It is impacting many of my friends, colleagues, and their families.

And it is likely to be Europe’s biggest blackout ever.

Portugal's grid operator says a rare atmospheric phenomenon caused anomalous oscillations on the grid.

We will learn more over the coming days.

One of the questions being asked tonight is whether high renewables penetration comes at the expense of grid reliability.

Gas and coal power plants produce electricity with big spinning generators, that store kinetic energy.

This helps stabilise the frequency on the grid, which needs to stay at exactly 50 Hz in Europe.

Wind and solar power don’t offer the same system inertia.

Which is why a grid with a high share of renewables can be more vulnerable to frequency disruptions.

This is a known technical challenge.

But it’s too early to say if this contributed to today’s blackout.

But it’s too early to say if this contributed to today’s blackout.

Right now we should not be pointing fingers or speculating, but hoping that emergency services and grid operators manage to limit the impacts on millions of people.

Today we saw the consequences of the grid tripping on a nice, sunny day in Europe.

We are used to taking power for granted, and offer little thought to how fragile the networks that keep the lights on really are.

That probably needs to change.

Only last week the IEA launched a new big report on the future of Energy Security.

As electrification of more and more of the economy accelerates, securing power grids becomes both more difficult and more important, the report says.

Was todays’s blackout an extreme event, unlikely to happen again?

Or a sign of things to come?

The Blue Origin flight showcased the utter defeat of American feminism | Moira Donegan The trip leaned on a vision of women’s empowerment that is light on substance and heavy on a childlike, girlish silliness

The Blue Origin women..."positioning themselves as aspirational models of femininity – have presented a profoundly antifeminist vision of what womankind’s future is: dependent on men, confined to triviality, and deeply, deeply silly." @moiradonegan.bsky.social

Vilified, arrested, held incommunicado: that's the price of protest in Britain today | George Monbiot It seems to me that whatever the charges facing the activists at the Quaker meeting house raid, their fundamental crime is dissent, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

It's not disruption that's being prosecuted in this country. It's dissent.

Disgusting, pathetic, entitled and patronising men engage in disgusting, pathetic, entitled and patronising rant.

Not sure anyone is really surprised?

It’s all beginning to feel a bit 1984. We’re in a battle against autocrats and oligarchs who are using money and misinformation to dismantle democracies. That’s why we’re looking for 1,984 new monthly supporters to make our biggest and boldest plans a reality (see link in bio)

52% of 13-27 yr olds think the UK would be better off as a dictatorship.

If these stats are accurate, it's a damning indictment of the failure of our political parties, media platforms and education system.

It's capitalist premise is, everyone else is greedy, self-centred, ready to stab you in the back, so stab them first

As opposed to socialism, working to build a community of generous, caring people

Petition: Create a public consultation on freedom of speech and disinformation We believe that lies, fraud, and media toxicity threaten our way of life. We think new mechanisms are needed to preserve confidence. How else can people know what to trust?

Musk is attacking UK democracy, and we need a proper response.

So let’s get this petition going viral, and force a grownup course of action at the highest level.

🧡After all the talk about the urgent need to restore trust in politics 2025 needs to be the year that action is taken.

2024 is the year we’ve proved how practical implementing the HoL recommendation for the regulation of election ads is.

Below are some "highlights".

I need to repost this. Watching mayhem unfold in US courtesy of Elon Musk, he shd not be allowed anywhere near British politics. But, it’s also the broader principle- hostile foreign actors shd not be able to fund British parties of any political persuasion. In US, foreign contributions are banned.

Khaled Nabhan demonstrated more humanity in a single video than the entire Western Bloc has in the last fourteen months.

Israel and the US murdering him, after killing his grandchild, perfectly encapsulates how they are at war with humanity itself.
