I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.
I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.
But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

After yesterday's election, I'm more certain than ever that too many Houstonians have tuned out. We've traded civic duty for social-media rants, and the sense of community that bonded us feels like a relic.
Yet when disasters strike, when hurricanes rip through our communities and flood our homes, Houston rallies. People wade through floodwaters to rescue strangers, pets, neighbors and anyone in need. We come alive when tragedy hits home.
So why can't we summon the same urgency when the storm is political, not natural?
In the historic 18th Congressional District, home to more than 825,000 residents, just 76,084 voted on Tuesday to choose a successor for U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who died in March.
At several near-empty polling sites, volunteers told me they were disappointed. "Too much at stake not to vote," one said.
The race is now headed to a runoff between Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee and former Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards, according to preliminary election results.
Houstonians offered many reasons for sitting out Tuesday's election, as evidenced by a Houston Chronicle video on social media. One person said he lacked the information to vote and wasn't prepared. Another didn't know it was voting day, then another said he was too overwhelmed by the current state of the nation to cast a ballot.
Today's @houstonchronicle.com piece unironically lamenting Houston's low voter turnout & low voter information, brought to you by the exact people paywalling their voter guide when they could simply give Houstonians free access to basic info about what's on the ballot & when

Chicago day care teacher arrested by ICE agents at preschool
You have no idea how deep the pain is going here. No fucking idea.
Today, a documented teacher was pulled out of a daycare by masked goons and slammed into a car in front of parents and children. She had working papers and the school had an I-9 and the agents didn't care. 1/

@governor.ca.gov Governor Newsom, given the abject failure of GOP transphobia tonight to get them absolutely any success whatsoever with voters, will you be reconsidering your policy of throwing transgender Californians under the bus to further your political ambitions?

Thoughts from a climate scientist on the Bill Gates climate memo
I just recorded a short video--essentially an updated version of my social media threads--on the Bill Gates climate memo. Despite agreeing with some points therein, I still think its framing is fundamentally flawed and thus also its key conclusions.

Workers harvesting marigolds
Farmworkers in Oxnard, CA are harvesting marigolds just in time for #DiaDeLosMuertos. The marigold is sometimes called Flor de Muerto (“Flower of the Dead”). These flowers are thought to attract the souls of the dead to the offerings and ensure eternal peace.

A nearly complete ofrenda for Dia de Muertos.
Well, there we are now. Technically, not an entirely proper ofrenda, but the intention is pure. Tomorrow evening I'll make some tasty cornbread, and share it with Dad, and John's parents.

A fireplace mantle decorated with marigold and monarch butterfly garlands, and a Catrina. More items will be added to create an ofrenda for Dia de Muertos.
Starting the ofrenda.

if the government was actually shut down they would stop taking your taxes
federal student debt would stop accruing interest
Argentina wouldn’t get a $40Bn bailout
Israel wouldn’t keep getting shipments of bombs
and we wouldn’t blow up fishing boats
but it’s not shut down at all.

Many people are outraged that Trump is demolishing part of the White House. But of course Trump can't do it without help. It's ACECO LLC of Silver Spring MD ("full-service demolition") that is tearing down the People's House. You can call them and let them know how you feel. 1/
