You are viewing a layer, imagine a printed paper map that you are sliding around--you can't turn on/off objects bc it's prerendered. You can pick a different layer style (cycling, humanitarian etc) or you could view the data in an app that lets you customize like Organic maps or Osmand

I understand your frustration but OpenStreetMap has NOT changed the gulf's name, you should check which app you are using, your app has made the change. You can use a different app with a more global perspective.

Which app are you using? Here's a screenshot from Organic Maps which uses Openstreetmap data and clearly labels the gulf as gulf of Mexico. I see your location is in the US, so your app might be geofencing you and serving the USGS name, per US law

Organic Maps: Offline Hike, Bike, Trails and Navigation Fast detailed offline maps for travelers, tourists, drivers, hikers and cyclists created by MapsWithMe (Maps.Me) app founders.

You might try an app that is based on open street map data, instead of using the default website. For example, Organic Maps does audible directions and runs on your phone.
