One guess: Their protest, which was hard work (to be separated from families, etc.), had to have a finite goal. They were successful in getting national attention and bringing Gavin Newsom / California into the fight.

But then the subtitle would be, "Is it me you're looking for?" and as a reader, my answer would be "no".

And, one should ask such a person, why are we talking about crime right now, as if it is the number one issue facing the country.

Occurs to me that Trump's entire regime consolidation strategy is to persuade everyone through displays of force that the regime is already consolidated and there's no point in resisting. Which I don't think will work, but also shows how important public acts of noncompliance are.

I'm watching upticks in state division movements (Illinois, Oregon), and polling in CA in support of autonomy. What would be enough to make Americans rethink boundaries? There is some recent work on when southern secession accelerated in the 1850s and I wonder whether and how it could happen now.

As advocacy, yes, devolution and disunionism need to consider equity. But my interest is how it could happen in a state with an old but thin national identity--without linguistic or ethnic cleavages, unlike Britain or Canada.

This is a bad take. Bork was rejected because he didn't have a judicial temperament, not intellectual chops. Temperament is a required qualification! Indeed, his later writings showed that the Dems judged Bork well. He would have been an injudicious, partisan, resentful culture warrior like Alito.
