See, the caves were always supposed to be made of human skin but they couldnโt properly communicate the vision on 90s technology.

Rock-Paper-Scissors game update!
More item animations for Natalie and Niko! Here we also see Natalie countering one of Niko's items with one of her own, which is an ability she's had for a while but I'd never caught on footage until now.
Feels like things are taking shape, here! #indiedev
Rock-Paper-Scissors Game Update!
I was finally sick of all the programmer art so I decided to finally add some graphical flair.
Behold, ITEM ANIMATIONS! (Only this one works, currently.) #indiedev

Todayโs the last day to get New Meat 50% off!

Question for any #indiedev, or really creators in general, what do you use for stock images?
Like if you just need Pictures Of Stuff for commercial use. I know there are a lot of avenues for this but what are the good ones?
Having one paid game and one free game as sister projects might be a good setup, especially with the free one being a pseudo-sequel to the paid one.
But I really have no idea what Iโm doing when it comes to stuff like this.
Iโm currently not sure if the Rock-Paper-Scissors game is going to be free or 99 cents.
I have spent SOME amount of money making it already, and I feel like if I spend money making a game I should charge something for it. But I canโt imagine going higher than a dollar, and at that pointโฆ

Next up: Giving Natalie the ability to buy stuff!
This is where the game gets really unique compared toโฆsayโฆincremental games you could liken it to. Itโs the part thatโll really feel like thereโs another person in this gamespace working with you (and competing with you).
Currently, Natalie just uses items randomly and doesn't strategize her plays around them once she does.
I'm gonna play around with it, though. As always, I design stuff super-modularly to I can easily build on this foundation.
Rock-Paper-Scissors game update!
Natalie can now use items! She doesn't have very many yet, but the logic's all there.
Niko and Natalie have different item pools, and Natalie has some items that are unique to her, like the Silver Handcuffs seen here. #indiedev
Now Iโm imagining an online game where, like. fifty people control a single character and the game averages their stick inputs and button presses.
They could actually be really interesting.
Kotaku whatโฆis this article?
Are you okay?
What I like about Pokemon Balatro is that the Jokers (Pokemon) are a lot less combo-centric in their design. Most have their own internal plan, and you have much fewer that are just Fully Useless without other combo-piece Jokers.
This DOES make the game slightly easier overall, but not too much.
Just tried out the latest version of that Pokemon mod for Balatro and I'll just say again...
I think the Balatro Pokemon mod is a genuinely better game than base Balatro. Like there are so many more tactical considerations and build options offered by its new mechanics.

04.02.2026 19:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I remember how the programmer of Final Fantasy 1 had you enter all your combat commands at once and had them play out in initiative order because he thought of it like planning a football play.
04.02.2026 17:16 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโll take it seriously when they stop bragging that their platform is super-popular if you count how many six-year-olds use it.
04.02.2026 16:25 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Also writing lots of dialogue. And I mean LOTS of dialogue. I want Natalie to have deep response banks for everything!
(Don't worry. For me, that's the fun part.)
This game's scope has definitely increased a little from my original plans, but not by TOO much. Once Natalie can use items, the game will be mostly mechanics-complete, and everything else will be cosmetics, cutscenes and making the UI look cool.
04.02.2026 06:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Implemented 9 more items in the Rock-Paper-Scissors game.
It's kind of interesting to see how many mechanics I can wring out of something as simple as Rock-Paper-Scissors. This is almost turning into Shotgun Roulette, or at least it will be once Natalie can use items, too. #indiedev
Iโm genuinely heartened to see a AAA studio announce plans to aggressively market their game in 2026.
These last couple years have really put the lie to the idea that good games sell themselves, especially at a AAA price point.
โMan, arenโt you tired of all those AI ads on Twitch? Thatโs like all I get!โ
OhโฆyeahโฆThatโs totally whatโฆI get, tooโฆ
Exchanging loing looksโฆ
03.02.2026 16:45 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Also the programmer art is REALLY starting to stack up here so please note that next to none of this UI stuff is final. I'm gonna really try to make this look cool, but right now I'm just getting it all working.
03.02.2026 06:32 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Rock Paper Scissors game update!
Random item purchasing has been implemented! (Most of these items don't actually work yet, though.)
I was able to more-or-less wholesale re-use code from New Meat's loot system for this. I shouldn't be surprised it was all compatible with MZ but I am. #indiedev
I never use subscription software to make anything, not even because Iโm afraid of it being turned off but because I never want my work being held hostage behind my continuing to pay.
Seems like my way of thinking might become more popular soon. #gamedev
Just a reminder that NEW MEAT is half-off through Friday!
Give this unique #roguelike #indiegame a try if you havenโt already! Still sitting on 100% positive reviews!
