Why Is Brazil’s Climate Fund Giving Hundreds of Millions to Big Ag?
Almost $500 million has flowed from the Climate Fund to corn ethanol projects from companies with environmental violations.
Pumped for this @intercept.com.br + @drilledmedia.bsky.social collab looking at Brazil's corn ethanol boom (and the role the U.S. has played in it). First story now, in English on our site &Portuguese on the Intercept Brasil site:

Campaigners are celebrating this morning as recognition of bioenergy and other "transitional fuels" is dropped from draft COP30 texts
But they believe this is just the start of a sustained lobby campaign from the bioenergy sector to become fuel of choice as countries scramble to ditch fossil fuels

The business pavilion is large and busy, and includes a billboard of sponsors including Ibedrola, National Grid and Itau.
Had to use a wide angle lens for this one
Sponsors for the Business Pavilion include energy companies and a bank that is the leading financier of new oil and gas in the Amazon according to @stand.earth 6/

The East African Community Pavilion - a much less glitzy space with no roof, but several people talking
FYI Eight East African countries clubbed together to buy a far smaller space 5/

Saudi Arabi's space is large, very flashy and brightly lit. A security guard stands in front of it
For some countries, take a guess at where the wealth to buy the meterage came from
This is Saudi Arabia - the second biggest oil producer in the world and one of the first pavilions you pass when you walk in the door… 4/

I couldn’t find any information on what a ‘blue zone’ pavilion costs
But at COP27 Scotland paid £227,383 for its pavilion
and in the 'green zone' next door NGOs and other delegations are paying up to USD 1,500 per m² 3/

The space for chad - a small square, empty of people
This is the pavilion for Chad
Chad was the country third hardest hit by climate change last year
Huge floods impacted impacted 2 million people and resulted in $380 million economic damage 2/

Malawi's pavilion is a small box, crowded with people but with no screens in sight
The UK's has a big red, white and blue frontage - multiple rooms and multiple screens
Day one at COP30 and my first impression is how directly wealth translates to square meter floorspace and flashy screens at the summit
Here is the pavilion for Malawi vs the pavilion for the UK 1/

COP 30 pavilions
I've made a spreadsheet with the event schedules for COP30 pavilions, including the UK 🇬🇧 Japan 🇯🇵 Indonesia 🇮🇩 Australia 🇦🇺 and China 🇨🇳
The UNFCCC has a schedule list, but hardly any of the major pavilions are on there.
I'll update the list as I collect more ⬇️

A bar chart, titled 'undeclared emissions from intensive livestock farms'. It includes four bars showing the number of intensive pig and poultry farms in UK declaring emissions in planning applications. 0 applications included emissions estimates, 4 provided some detail, 12 only discussed the emissions in passing, and 19 provided no information.
Not a single farm declared emissions in their planning applications, despite obligation to assess all "significant" env impacts
If all the farms were approved it could generate emissions similar to 500k return flights from London to New York

Reading this felt even more shocking having worked on migrant workers rights because
a) states are notoriously lax on finding + convicting abuses
b) few migrant workers can speak out let alone get convictions due to risk of retaliation or exportation
So this millions is the tip of a *huge* iceberg

If I recommend reading one thing today it's this...
An amazing group of journalists have spent a year tracking the millions in CAP subsidies going to farmers who are being investigated, have been convicted, or are even in prison for violating migrant workers' rights

think that realistically I would have always been deeply, deeply worried about the rise of far-right ideas in public discourse but I truly never expected this level of blithe elite complacency, turns out I do feel worried but mostly I feel like I'm going insane, watching them do.......nothing at all
