Saudi Arabi's space is large, very flashy and brightly lit. A security guard stands in front of it

For some countries, take a guess at where the wealth to buy the meterage came from

This is Saudi Arabia - the second biggest oil producer in the world and one of the first pavilions you pass when you walk in the door… 4/

I couldn’t find any information on what a ‘blue zone’ pavilion costs

But at COP27 Scotland paid £227,383 for its pavilion

and in the 'green zone' next door NGOs and other delegations are paying up to USD 1,500 per m² 3/

The space for chad - a small square, empty of people

This is the pavilion for Chad

Chad was the country third hardest hit by climate change last year

Huge floods impacted impacted 2 million people and resulted in $380 million economic damage 2/

Malawi's pavilion is a small box, crowded with people but with no screens in sight

The UK's has a big red, white and blue frontage - multiple rooms and multiple screens

Day one at COP30 and my first impression is how directly wealth translates to square meter floorspace and flashy screens at the summit

The UNFCCC has a schedule list, but hardly any of the major pavilions are on there.

Every day is a good day to point out that 92% of Reform's donations were found to come from figures and groups linked to the fossil fuel industry. @desmog.com

Reading this felt even more shocking having worked on migrant workers rights because
a) states are notoriously lax on finding + convicting abuses
b) few migrant workers can speak out let alone get convictions due to risk of retaliation or exportation

So this millions is the tip of a *huge* iceberg

If I recommend reading one thing today it's this...

An amazing group of journalists have spent a year tracking the millions in CAP subsidies going to farmers who are being investigated, have been convicted, or are even in prison for violating migrant workers' rights

think that realistically I would have always been deeply, deeply worried about the rise of far-right ideas in public discourse but I truly never expected this level of blithe elite complacency, turns out I do feel worried but mostly I feel like I'm going insane, watching them do.......nothing at all
