Ketanji Brown Jackson: Trump Argument On Universal Injunctions Creates "Catch Me If You Can" State Justic K

I love Justice Jackson’s argument today. If a court can’t stop an illegal/unconstitutional EO, “It means the government just continues doing the purportedly unlawful thing, and it delays the ability of this Court to reach the underlying issue.”

I think we’d all be safer if she was sent to El Salvador while we find out.

So if he who shall remain nameless paid El Salvador $20k for each prisoner, how much do you suppose we’d have to raise to get them returned? Someone smarter than me would need to work out the details but I can donate.

What if there were a privately owned and funded, for profit corporation with the mission of providing reparations to descendants of enslaved African people and land back to Indigenous people? And other initiatives too progressive for the Democratic Party? It’s fantasy but if it were to happen…

Second, I’d love to see post WWII research updated with all we have learned in the last 50 years, especially about racism and opposition to civil rights. I’m working on it myself: how I learned lessons passed down through generations about the importance of obedience to authority. (The end)

Miller connected AH’s behavior to a well-documented history of shaming, threats and outright brutality in child rearing. There’s much more to this theory. I bring it up here in response to Sherrilyn Ifill’s post because, first, Ms. Ifill is absolutely right. (3)

Miller wrote, “When non-Germans watched AH’s appearance in newsreels, they were never able to understand the adulation he was given or the number of votes he received in 1933…it was precisely his theatrical gestures, ridiculous to a foreigner’s eyes, that were so familiar to the masses.” (2)

There was a lot of research after WWII that examined why Germans, or any group of people, would follow a leader who is obviously unwell, unstable and unsafe for human consumption. Alice Miller write a book called For Your Own Good in 1980. (1)

When (not if) the policy turns out to be flawed, to have unintended consequences, you argue some more about the best way to fix it. It’s time to permanently shelve arguments that consolidate wealth and power in fewer hands. Maybe a constitutional
amendment banning trickle down economics? (2)

Today I’m wondering what winning will look like. Maybe an election will be part of it, but I think the bigger win will be re-learning how to argue well. As far as I can see, solid arguments are the foundation of democracy. Then you base policy on the best argument. (1)

Question for constitutional law scholars: how would you amend the constitution to prevent the kind of government takeover we’re currently experiencing?

As long as we are looking at what politicians need to do for us,even the good ones, we are looking in the wrong direction. This time it’s up to us.

From birth, we are told who we are and what we are allowed to do. We learn the consequences of stepping outside the limits placed on us. It’s important to be part of something larger than ourselves, but it’s also important to feel safe questioning some of the limits on our identity.

The idea that people’s feelings matter has only gained broad acceptance in my lifetime (born in 1959). IMO, clinging to a brittle identity based on an externally imposed hierarchy is an artifact of European generational trauma. There aren’t enough characters to adequately explain this but I’m white.

Republicans push to make "Trump Derangement Syndrome" a mental illness Five Republican Minnesota state senators are pushing for the term to be included in the state's definition of mental illness.

MN republicans hard at work. This is what my taxes go for.

“Five Republican Minnesota state senators are set to introduce a bill tomorrow that would classify "Trump Derangement Syndrome" (TDS)…as a mental illness.”

I keep seeing posts about certain US states joining Canada. 🇨🇦 it’s gotten to the point where I’m seriously considering how that would work. I don’t think redrawing international borders is realistic. A formal alliance between blue states and US allies who are being alienated by bone spurs though…

In February, a friend posted on FB that she witnessed an ICE raid on her neighbor’s home.
There were no immigrants, just an older couple, terrified by the invasion. A man with a green card who has never committed a crime faces is in detention, facing deportation. Any of us could be next.

I started working in mental health right when the 2011 shutdown started. I worked at the old Dorothy Day center in St. Paul. The interruption in benefits hurt people badly, and the team I worked with didn’t support the shutdown. This is different, though. They are arresting us in our homes.

In 2011 Mark Dayton shut down the MN state government. From Wikipedia: “The shutdown was disruptive to the government and some Minnesotans, but its ultimate economic impact was minimal. Politically, it could have influenced the Republican electoral defeat in the 2012 state elections.” Do it again.

My parents grew up as farmers during the depression. My mom used to say they “knew sh*t from shinola.” You don’t need a college degree to see the difference. I see a bunch of non-shinola being sold at high prices every time that so-called president opens his messy mouth.

Yesterday (March 1) there was a town hall in my legislative district, south Minneapolis, MN. My state senator and two reps provided information and answered questions. Some of my neighbors are really well informed and I learned from them. There was a little disruption but the panel handled it well.
