We at AWU believe deeply in the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all. Our union family is made up of many LGBTQIA+ members, and we stand arm in arm, organizing for a better future for all of us. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

These troubling developments only motivate us to continue to organize, as history tells us that collective action has *always* been the true driving force for change.

In 2025 alone, we have witnessed Google rolling back DEI initiatives – notably removing Pride Month notifications from Google Calendar – and pulling out of sponsoring Pride events around the world.

Right now, there’s an attempt in Congress to put a 10-year moratorium on AI regulation. This would not only halt AI policy at the federal and state levels.

It also builds a wall of immunity for AI developers and deployers in cases where AI tools cause harm...

Statement from CWA President Claude Cummings Jr.:

Members of our union and other journalists have been targeted by law enforcement with less-lethal rounds and tear gas and detained while covering the protests in Los Angeles.

But the fight is far from over. While Tuesday’s announcement did fulfill one of our demands, it still included a top-down RTO mandate for many remote Googlers. We, the workers who drive Google’s profitability, deserve a real say over our working conditions.

We know that peer companies like Meta and Microsoft continue to conduct mass layoffs without warning – through worker organizing, we are changing that culture at Google.

It’s been a big week for our union! Google expanded the use of voluntary exit packages (VEPs) to multiple product areas, fulfilling one of AWU’s key demands. The next day, workers across the country joined together to reflect on our Googlers For Job Security campaign – and chart our course forward✊

It’s clear that the only path to real change at work is through our collective action. Join us in building a stronger union and a workplace where every Googler has a say!

Google runs because we make it run, generating $350 billion in revenue and $100 billion in profit in 2024 alone. If the company truly values its workforce, it must respect our voices in shaping policies that affect our jobs, families, and futures.

However, today’s announcement doesn't meet our full demand for requiring VEPs prior to any layoffs taking place. + Google’s RTO mandate upends 1000s of lives without input from remote workers, their teams, or even managers. Decisions about our work should not be made without us.

While peer companies like Meta and Microsoft continue to conduct mass layoffs without warning, Google workers have secured a more dignified alternative through the power of our union.

Over the past six months, thousands of us have raised our voices and taken action for real job security, and as a result, Google has vastly expanded their use of VEPs across the company. Since we launched our campaign, over 40,000 workers have been offered VEPs.

ICYMI, in Jan 2025, Google workers launched the Googlers For Job Security campaign, demanding guaranteed 2023 severance matches, buyouts before layoffs, and no GRAD quotas.
