Fascinating article this.
Gives an insider's view for one.

But also goes a little way to answering a question I have often pondered. Do the main movers in our media and politics actually believe what they say?

Less a coup, perhaps, more a witch hunt by true believers Gibb and cronies.

I think there are real problems with BBC News.
Not the ones being aired today.
But those arising from
* decades of govt / right wing attacks
* existing in a right wing media environment
* over-reliance on privately educated employees

But as someone who has spent a lot of time abroad

A little antidote to Monday morning for anyone who needs it.

I use Bluesky for news and opinion but I try to balance that out with positive content away from the news - and Robin’s shots of Liverpool never fail to lift my mood.

Some sensible, hype free thoughts in this article about how work might change as AI develops and proliferates...

I definitely agree re. importance/usefulness of awareness.
But even if adaptive narcissists are nearly 1:5 of population (v quick googling) also important we balance awareness with some initial general assumption of good faith in people? For own health?

What's your take on that?

Entirely. As you and Joel both point out, not the act most audiences want and certainly not the night I saw.

Mentioned it mostly because maybe it indicates he likes to toy with the idea of doing something like this, but not to commit.

I saw JC in Hull so must have been around 2004/5ish.

Second half he did a gag with a nonce/paedophile related punchline.
Got laugh, then told audience off for laughing at child abuse.

For a minute, it was an entirely different, much better act.

Audience did not like it. He backed off.

A simple first step: No more vox pops in deserted midday high streets when the only people likely to have the time or inclination to speak to a camera crew are wholly untypical. Pensioners, in other words.

Focus groups get a bad rep but I have never once run one during normal working hours.

Broadcasters - especially the BBC - have been working hard to ensure they give a voice to the 25-35% of people willing to vote Reform (and harder groups within that, like anti-asylum protest and Tommy protest)

Need to pay as much attention to the unheard majority who fear that form of politics

Love this version.

A smoothly oiled machine of a band, but one that has somehow found itself up at 10 am and in a room full of kids πŸ™‚

(I know nothing of the actual recording details, if that's not obvious).

Given this seems like it will involve reworking the Emergency Operations Center, it looks like this work will mean the security assurance of the White House will have to be downgraded to the equivalent of, oh, say, that of an Air Force 1 incarnation built by a foreign power.

Above all, the police approach in that decade culminated in the unlawful killing of 96 people and decades of cover-up.

Then why is this champion of premier league fairness not less outraged about Grealish being on the pitch, than Dewsbury Hall being off it?

Or, you know, any of the fetid morass of VAR, PGMOL or other partisanly applied regulations that he might be offended by, had he but eyes to see?

Breathtaking.

Man paid to have opinions on football is shocked - shocked! - to find out that players can move between clubs as a result of commercial and financial agreements.

Let's be super charitable and assume that his point that Palace have to face a player that City don't has some merit.

Similar background to you Lauren, and I also struggled with 4.
I'm intrigued how you could validate how much this tests fluency (which I'm sure it does, to an extent). And how much it tests, for example, a certain sort of puzzle solving way of thinking.

Heseltine.
Dyed in the wool, old school Tory.

But he was granted the freedom of the City of Liverpool for good reason.

He can read a phrase like 'managed decline' or 'illegal immigrants' and see through them to the impact and human cost of how they are used - and misused.
