Gig work has always been around for lots of people, it was just cash-in-hand and now it's increasingly formalised.

Lots of low-earners avoid perm contracts like the plague because it's overtaxed and they're left with too little. (A solution is a much higher personal allowance.)

FYI I just signed up to see what the jobs are like, and these apps are carnage. Most gigs have hundreds of applicants for a single role. This is a sign of much bigger change to come...

This makes a lot of sense. To your comment on freelancers paying less tax - well, low-wage slaves are highly overtaxed and barely scraping by. That system needs fixing, this is a fix.
