Bay area housing is not representative of the whole state. San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and many other cities are price prohibitive due to location. Move inland and housing becomes more affordable. Not saying cheap but better than what you pay near the coast.

Compare housing costs in the city to areas outside the city. City housing is incredibly expensive, just like any large city in any state.
