There are two Red-breasted Nuthatches on the grassy ground. Right of center is the first one, there is a hint of a bush stem just to right of them as well. The second nuthatch is on the far left, on the ground, head down as if looking for a seed or insect. You can see parts of the Aphrodite bush hanging down in the background.

On a diagonal, leafless branch sits three Purple Martins. The top right and center birds are fledged young; the lower right is an adult female attempting to put a midge into the mouth of the center bird.

Center frame, a Barred Owl is perched, their body facing right, with their head turned left as if looking over their right shoulder. This "Who Cooks For You" Owl is native to NW Ohio but are masters in camouflage. This is the first decent photo (not obscured by leaves, branches or darkness) that I've gotten of a Barred in six years.

Thanks Tom. I got really lucky--a new camera I was still getting used to the new settings... looking back many horrible shots... But she was in good focus. Very happy with the results.

This is one of my favorite photos because last February while on my way to work, I found this immature Horned Grebe who seemingly mistook the color of the road pavement for water. Horned Grebes are water birds, meaning they cannot walk on land and once she landed, she was stuck. I parked in front of the bird to block traffic from and tried unsuccessfully to contact someone who could help, when a good Samaritan-who lived in the neighborhood arrived and promised to call Nature's Nursery-a rehabber, and take care of her. Later that day, the bird was released into the Maumee River at a park located behind a water treatment plant where the river was not completely iced over. The following day, I made a point of going out and grabbing photos of this beauty-happily living their best life in the best environment.

A thin, diagonal tree runs through the photo from top to bottom. Perched atop the tree in the right center of frame is an immature male (note the hint of mustache on their cheek) Northern Flicker (yellow-shafted), perched facing and looking left. If you zoom in, you might see snowflakes falling in the background.

Actually, officially winter does not begin for another 2.5 wks. But, these late fall snows do a good job of mimicking them. I read the other day, our region is going to be hammered w/cold and snow this winter. These snows are a mere prelude😡. Have a good day Beth! Do something fun!

Anything that drives our spouses a little crazy is always good in my opinion.

Me too... sadly the rising cost of everything made it unaffordable for us--mostly because of the distance away. But we've found an alternative for future trips down and hopefully have a chance to lunch with you again.

Taken January 6th in Garden City, SC a Brown Pelican on their quest to find fish in the gradually receding waters of the Grand Strand low tide, took to the air, flying right towards me, allowing for a wonderful flight shot of this beautiful creature. Center frame, wings extended, looking straight at the viewer. White cap, brown body and wings and a very long bill. From allaboutbirds.org., Brown Pelicans are huge, stocky seabirds. They have thin necks and very long bills with a stretchy throat pouch used for capturing fish. Their wings are very long and broad and are often noticeably bowed when the birds are gliding.
