I’d like to add that they vaccinate from here on out. The reasons for not vaccinating are some of the wildest conspiracy theories out there. And it harms everyone if the vast majority aren’t vaccinated.

Sure. Lots of layers to quality instruction and impacts on students. Definitely a place for quality research in education. More is needed actually. But that’s a step removed from how student achievement should be measured. But we might just be splitting hairs with our vocab. lol

Fair frustration in that situation. To be fair, educational assessments that yields valid results are HARD to develop. Even K-12 educators aren’t well trained to measure student achievement but it’s getting better.

Your last question is key for educators. And sure, identifying quality methods should be based on research. It wasn’t clear to me the connection you were making between student mastery on course content to hypothesis testing. I don’t see them both as supporting quality classroom teaching & learning

Maybe. But that’s a very specific circumstance. It’s unclear if the frustration expressed by the original post was talking about this specific issue.

Measures of student achievement should align with course objectives and how students are taught. And follow the rigors of quality. These measures would not speak to rejecting a null hypothesis when discussing student achievement. That said, if the assessments were part of a scientific study.

Hypothesis testing is basically rejecting the null of that hypothesis in a very structured scientific study. Measuring student achievement addresses mastery of measurable outcomes using assessments specifically developed for that purpose. 1/2

What master looks like… exactly, which should mirror the objective and be aligned with the instruction. Analyzing teaching methods would come after seeing how the students do on the tests that have been carefully developed and administered. Quality measures of student achievement are hard to develop
