Judee Sill was a former armed robber. As a teenager, Sill and an acquaintance committed a series of armed robberies, holding up liquor stores and gas stations. She was arrested and spent nine months in reform school.

Judee Sill was David Geffen's first artist on Asylum Records. She was the inaugural signing for the prestigious label that would later feature acts like the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, and Jackson Browne. However, her relationship with Geffen soured after she reportedly outed him in an interview, leading to him withdrawing promotional support for her second album.

Judee Sill's music was deeply influenced by classical composers like Bach. Sill, who was also the sole producer and arranger for her second album, 'Heart Food,' wove baroque string and horn arrangements into her folk-pop songs. She famously told an interviewer that her only influences were Bach, Ray Charles, and the philosopher Pythagoras.

Judee Sill died on November 23, 1979, in North Hollywood, California, of "acute cocaine and codeine intoxication." Her death was ruled a suicide by the coroner, though friends and family believe it may have been an accidental overdose. Her ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean after a service held by close friends. She became a cult figure only decades after her death. Despite receiving critical acclaim during her life, Sill's albums were commercial failures. She faded into obscurity and was so forgotten that no obituary was published when she died. Her music began to be rediscovered in the 2000s -- we released a couple of her albums in expanded form on Rhino Handmade -- gaining the cult following she never had while alive.

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.
