Taking to my vet just now I realized vets : pets :: linguists : languages.

well, I do stand corrected, it looks to be estimated at about 21%. that said, the study itself acknowledges that techniques for doing so are pretty error prone. they basically just guess based on what is produced minus what people actually need.

My understanding is that’s primarily due to grocery stores doing that, but I had difficulty locating a source. If you have a source that clearly makes that distinction, I’d be happy to take a look at it. That said, it seems there’s some shifty semantic ball-and-cup games around this issue generally

The point is, before you feel guilty, remember that grocery stores with locked dumpsters contribute way more to food waste than the minor scraps you didn’t meticulously account for in preparing a family holiday meal.

The framing on this article makes it sound like me-maw making too much casserole and throwing it out is the problem.

“Food waste” is any waste from food: bones, husks, coffee grounds. It also includes waste from grocery stores or elsewhere in the supply chain.
