Rod Dreher Thinks the Enlightenment Was a Mistake The influential author derides secularism and the modern world. Conservativesβ€”including the vice presidentβ€”are joining him on a march back to the Middle Ages.

This is maybe the first decent profile of Rod Dreher (there have been many) because it captures what a toxic, insane piece of shit he is. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

There's a reasonable argument to make for Platner: that he's got a better chance against Collins, and getting a Democrat in the seat supersedes concerns about his tattoo. That's the argument I'd make, were I so inclined. But this is something else.

Rick Jackson:
We took the glass off of the sketch and there was an indentation that extended from the left edge of the mouth curled upwards. It was probably a quarter of an inch or three-eighths of an inch, which is
significant when it's a small sketch, that were curled upward toward the ear, much like the Dahlia's body was found with the curled incised wound all the way up kinda toward her temple area on both sides. The right side of the sketch's mouth is covered with the hair. So you see nothing there, but it was definitely an indentation that extended from that side of the mouth. You can really see it under the macro lens, especially with the peripheral lighting from the side. Yeah, so it was intentional. It was
almost like somebody had taken maybe a dull nail and extended the mouth a little bit right from the corner. The indentation is definitely there.

It looks like a shorter version of the incised wounds that went from both sides of Elizabeth Short's mouth by the killer. It was deliberately set right there. There's no doubt about it. It matches right in line with the curl smile. It's very, very clear.

Ninth episode dropped. Incredibly, the case gets even weaker. Rick Jackson was a damn homicide detective with the LAPD. This is mindnumbingly stupid.

These New Yorkers had homes. They died outside in the freezing cold. The cases show even those with stable living situations can be vulnerable to extreme weather.

These New Yorkers had homes. They died outside in the freezing cold anyway

We’ve found at least 5 of the New Yorkers who died outdoors during the recent cold stretch had permanent housing.

This is how I feel about AI in the nonfiction/true crime space. If you're vulnerable to being replaced by a computer program, that's only because you're writing lazy, half-assed crap in the first place.

Nancy Guthrie disappearance highlights limitations of police technology to solve crimes, experts say Many of the tried-and-true methods of modern crime-solving β€” surveillance cameras, cellphone tracking, license plate readers β€” have not led to any arrests.

As police increasingly rely on forensics and other technological advances, they've gotten worse at their jobs. www.newsday.com/long-island/...

TSA
When airport security screeners start missing pay, many stop showing up to work, causing TSA lines to grow at hubs throughout the country. In prior shutdowns, that started happening about a month in.

This time, screeners would begin missing full paychecks in mid-March, likely spurring longer waits during the peak of spring break travel.

While DHS paid air marshals during the historic government shutdown last fall, that didn’t cover checks for the TSA screeners who keep people and their baggage moving through U.S. airports.

One factor that could motivate TSA agents to show up to work anyway is the $10,000 bonuses DHS officials gave to screeners who demonstrated β€œexemplary service” after the funding lapse that ran through October and into November.
