I might end up spending a lot on private health for an operation in the not too distant future. I can't justify ADHD diagnosis as well. I'm working on the assumption I have ADHD and trying to make my own accomodations for it. One of the few advantages of being my own boss. πŸ˜†

When I rule the earth I'll ban the use of jack hammers after 8pm and anyone found to be flouting this rule will be kept awake for 24 hours by the sound of nails down a chalk board.

So many things about it this makes me sad and angry.

A friend warned me they had paused adult ADHD diagnosis in Belfast and I'm looking at 10 years now for diagnosis.

I don't want to be on anti anxiety medication. I deserve to be on the medication that will actually help me.

Every month. Like clockwork I get a migraine.

First off is feeling pukey for a few hours and then the pain starts. This month I've at least realised why I feel randomly pukey so have been able to cancel my class before I start talking gibberish to students when the pain hits.

You should do an experiment. In a few days just simply post I like dogs and see what happens. 😁

While sudden cliff falls at Birling Gap (near my home town of Eastbourne) are no joke, I really love how much it looks like we’ve roused a grumpy, sleepy sea-wizard.

This seems to have turned into a thread of people showing you their dogs and Molly is worried she might be left out.

Paragraph from the Morning Call newsletter, which says:

When I recently saw Jonathan Haidt, whose 2024 book The Anxious Generation has defined this debate, he spoke of a β€œglobal moment of change”. Confronted by evidence of a mental health crisis, Australia had announced its intention to ban social media for under-16s and, Haidt predicted, other countries would inevitably follow. So they have. β€œToday, our children are exposed to a space they were never meant to navigate alone: a space of addiction, abuse, pornography, manipulation, violence,” declared Spain’s Socialist party prime minister, Pedro SΓ‘nchez, this month as he announced an Australia-style ban. β€œWe will no longer accept that.”

Have we considered regulating companies which build "a space of addiction, abuse, pornography, manipulation, violence", to try to rein in the addiction, abuse, manipulation and violence, rather than just saying "that's all totally fine, but only if you're an adult"?

This is not just an issue for under 16s. People don't magically stop being susceptible to addictive algorithms when they hit 16. This is a problem for all age groups.

Shocking content gets 'engagement' so that's what gets pushed to keep people on the platform to keep eyes on the adverts.

16.02.2026 12:05 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The actual issues with most social media are the algorithms that push content to keep people 'engaged' and on the platform.

The big platforms have morphed from a way to keep in touch and be social with others into advertising companies.

I have been thinking a lot about the social media for under 16s and I have thoughts.

Banning under 16s is easy for the social media companies. It loses relatively income as that age group don't have much spending power. It doesn't cost them much and distracts people from the actual issues.

16.02.2026 12:05 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's *so* poorly defined. Functionally there is no difference between tiktok and YouTube shorts.

It's not the concept of social media that is the problem, it's the algorithms and incentivising 'engagement' that's the problem.

A museum display case. Inside is a puppet of a snake with a human head. The information on the exhibit explains that it is a puppet of Peter Mandelson from the TV show Spitting Image and that Peter Mandelson was secretary of state for Northern Ireland in 1999.

Had to laugh at the Peter Mandelson Spitting Image puppet at the Ulster Museum.

If only there were some clues that he is who he is.

My dissertation was on anxiety in primates. πŸ™„

Studying psychology and how it changes over time in humans and other species can help us understand unconscious shitty behaviour to help us rationalise our thoughts and stop said shitty behaviour.

That's what people should be talking about.

One of the things that really pisses me off about racists using pseudo science to try to justify their shitty world view is it tarnishes a lot of good science.

I did my undergraduate dissertation in the Evolutionary Psych department of Liverpool Uni and I had someone claim I'm therefore racist.

Even if they did ask me to describe the guy, I'm quite sure they would say to their boss that I was just "one of those customers".

I also don't have the energy to give them detailed feedback either if I'm being honest.

FFS. I managed an online community who had this one regular who posted a "joke" every day. The number of these jokes that involved domestic violence was shocking. When we moderated it he went off on one about just a joke and free speech. πŸ™„
