I found out that he belonged to a neighbor. He escaped somehow and was wandering through the neighborhood. He was really curious. I didn’t know if he wanted a pat or if he was going to try and bite me. He was huge. They are cute - kinda. 😄

TY - I thought it was really cool too. That’s what made me take a picture of it. I didn’t know what it was, but I discovered it’s called a stabilimentum. It’s said to help camouflage the spider, reflect UV light to attract prey, and as a warning to larger animals ( such as birds ) to avoid the web.

A juvenile orb-weaver spider, likely a silver garden spider (Argiope argentata), rests at the center of its web. The spider has a patterned black-and-white body with banded legs, positioned on top of a bright zig-zag silk structure called a stabilimentum. The background is a blur of green leaves, emphasizing the intricate web design. Photo taken in Southeast Texas.
