Landscape photo of a swampy area covered in green moss and shallow pools of water. Dozens of cypress knees and weathered stumps rise from the ground, some leaning at angles, while a tall cypress tree grows from a large base in the center. Fog drifts across the background, softening the tree line and creating a mysterious, atmospheric scene.

TY - I thought it was really cool too. Thatโs what made me take a picture of it. I didnโt know what it was, but I discovered itโs called a stabilimentum. Itโs said to help camouflage the spider, reflect UV light to attract prey, and as a warning to larger animals ( such as birds ) to avoid the web.

A blue-winged wasp (Scolia dubia) with shimmering iridescent wings clings to a cluster of spotted bee balm (Monarda punctata). The layered bracts are pale green and white, tipped with speckled yellow flowers that attract pollinators in late summer. Native to Southeast Texas, this wildflower is a magnet for beneficial insects like the blue-winged wasp, which feeds on nectar while its larvae help control beetle grubs in the soil. The photo highlights the balance of beauty and function in native plants and pollinator ecology.
Although Bee Balm is native to Southeast Texas this picture was actually taken at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

A weathered driftwood branch stretches into the surf, partially submerged in reflective wet sand, with the sun low in the sky and soft light dancing on the waves.
