The same narrative is weaponized domestically in India to stoke harassment, discrimination, and violence against tens of millions of Bengali-speaking Muslim citizens.

These influence campaigns seek to create instability within Bangladesh, shape international perceptions of the country as “lawless” and “Islamist,” and undermine public trust in institutions and political leaders, especially those not aligned with India’s foreign policy approach toward Bangladesh.

These campaigns began immediately after the August 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina and have since surged at key moments following specific trigger incidents.

On X alone, we identified more than 700,000 posts from over 170,000 accounts promoting claims of “Hindu genocide” in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh heads to the polls on February 12 under the shadow of cross-border online disinformation.

Our research, shared exclusively with @afp.com , has identified coordinated Indian disinformation campaigns falsely alleging large-scale violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
