I feel bad that this is hurting a "blue" state industry ... but I get over it by drinking an incredible wine from Portugal!

We won't be going back to US wines. #Ever

I'm checking to see if the pedestrian bridge is open.

On an eBike, it takes about 6 minutes to bike across the river. On a "normal" bike ... going down is REALLY fast; coming up, not so much. But it's a healthier alternative to driving (especially now)!

Since the City of Lethbridge is not on Bluesky ... Whoop Up Drive is closed between Scenic Dr and University Dr, due to an incident under the bridge. This will also affect Transit service.

I assume websites will update soon.

There’s been an incident under Whoop Up Drive, and it is now closed going both directions until further notice. Please use Highway 3. Drive carefully and follow all posted signage. #yql #lethbridge #brightertogetheryql #yqljen

The exterior of a simple, wooden building scarcely more than a shed. The walkway in front is a wooden boardwalk. It leads to other, similarly modest wooden buildings.

This is the Japanese Bunkhouse at the North Pacific Cannery, British Columbia, as it was in the 1930s. Japanese workers lived here until 1942, when they were forced into internment camps. Some returned after the war, many moved east because they had nothing to return to.

Remembering August 6, 1945.

Alberta’s Perverse New Barriers to COVID Vaccines | The Tyee The virus hits the old and poor hardest. The province is erecting hurdles for granting them protection.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who revived her ailing political career by peddling conspiratorial COVID theories, has designed a program that is not only punitive but discriminatory, bureaucratic and Soviet in nature, writes Andrew Nikiforuk.

You, a resident of Ontario, went to bed on Tuesday night in a country where the Charter of Rights and Freedoms affords no protections to bike lanes. You woke up on Thursday morning and… precisely nothing has changed, despite what an already-long line of fulminating op-eds, social media posts, and talk radio rants have asserted. If you’re a cyclist in Ontario anywhere other than Toronto, this week’s court decision by Justice Paul Schabas provides precisely zero grounds for you to browbeat your municipality into installing or maintaining bike lanes. Even in Toronto, Schabas’s decision leaves intact Doug Ford’s powers to micromanage precisely which streets new bike lanes can be installed on.

There is no Charter right to bike lanes, before or after Schabas’s decision. The only thing bike lanes and the Charter have in common is that they both protect cyclists, a fact which drives Ford, his cabinet, and the PC majority in the legislature to distraction. This week’s decision was about something both much simpler and far more important: the threshold a government needs to meet before it can cause harm to its citizens, and how many falsehoods it can tell in the process.

Reminder of evidence that WAS included in the trial:

- EM's weight at the time
- Texts between EM and her colleague where she didn't disclose anything (used to suggest she's lying)
- Suggestions by the defense team that EM wasn't actually drunk, that she lied about falling outside the bathroom at Jack's, that Foote was wearing pants when he did a "fun party trick" over her body (not face) and that she wasn't hit but rather playfully and consensually "tapped" on the butt.

Reminder of evidence that was EXCLUDED from trial:

- The 2022 Hockey Canada investigation interviews with the players, which included statements that Foote was naked from the waist down when he did the splits over EM's face and that EM fell outside the bathroom at Jack's
- Text from a witness immediately after the event that said "[Dube] was smacking that girl's ass so hard. It look like it hurt so bad."

And yet, during the Hockey Canada trial, we saw rape myths on full display across five teams of defense lawyers. At no point did the judge correct such myths.

The judge DID make sure to remind the jury that they were to disregard signs outside that said "Justice for survivors", though.

Interesting what counts as biasing. Or rather, WHO counts.

PLUS! Due to a precedent setting ruling from the Ontario Superior Court in 2024, expert witnesses in trauma are no longer allowed to be called by the Crown in sexual assault trials.

The Court decided that expert testimony in that area is "unnecessary and confusing" and that "instruction against the myth-based reasoning is sufficient".

Thanks to the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres for synthesizing exactly why the Hockey Canada trial set EM up to fail.

If you won 30% of the vote but only 11% of the seats you should be demanding proportional representation every chance you can get.
