this is the church that hosted El Arbol, the free store we built to support migrants staying at the 14th district police station a couple years ago. So great to see this project finally breaking ground!

Judson and Moore in Avondale hosts this excellent monthly bluegrass jam. It's a great hang and lots of very friendly and talented pickers. Next one is this sunday.

What My Musical Instruments Have Taught Me I’ve spent my life working on virtual realityβ€”but my instruments have revealed the real world.

I think Jaron Lanier summed it up pretty well: "...For those students who want to have optimal music made for them, I have to ask, Would you want robots to have sex for you so you don’t have to? I mean, what is life for?"

Im playing in a Last Waltz tribute show this weekend and was rewatching the film, so much of it is The Band being like ”the road is a young man’s game, we’re all too old and haggard for that nowβ€œ and you look it up they were all like 32. Anyway shows on Saturday in bucktown, come on out.

It's especially upsetting given that her widely recommended and highly visible book about finding Judaism is presented in this sort of modern, pragmatic framing.

A friend of mine was at the Rico Fresh gassing and was sending me videos before it was being covered anywhere. The next day, an ice car drove past me and my kids near the Square followed by a bunch of cars honking in warning. those 2 events felt like a line had been crossed on an extremely locally.

the news you can use framing of this is just so so bleak

i felt similarly. The dialogue was super clunky at times, but the sheer force of the performances made it work.

The Official Sandra Boynton Web Site

Its the ending that irks me -- the monsters leave the hippo some gifts and cake after all the curfuffle, and the hippo is still left alone and confused on his birthday.

But yes, we love Boynton and especially her 90s style website with flashing "enter" button www.sandraboynton.com/sboynton/ind...

Birthday Monsters is mid-tier Boynton imo. Definitely a notch above phoned-in also-rans like "Your Personal Penguin" but vastly less inspired than classics like "15 Animals."

β€œEarly morning Thursday, November 13, Felix and his family’s life as they know it was turned upside down. Felix, a dedicated father and husband, was taken by ICE while he was with his young daughter on their way to school. For the past 15 years, Felix has lived in Chicago with his wife and child..”

her first crescendo of "we do not belong together" may very well be the peak of the art form (and really all art forms)

We need to do everything we can to keep the organizing momentum that was catalyzed by the events of the last two months going. A year from now, we should be looking back on whistle parties and school watches as turning points!

We can definitely be optimistic about this news but can’t forget that they’ll still have some presence, and especially can’t abandon the movement we have started building in defiance of what they have done so far.

It's all a game to them. They terrorize communities, tear families apart, and inflict untold damage wherever they appear, and it's all a fucking game.

you can also often buy $100 gift cards for uber eats, DoorDash etc for $80 at Costco. using those saves you 20% for when you need to order in, essentially counter acting the platform and delivery fees.
