Dialup AOL is being discontinued next month. The end of an era. I met my high school sweetheart and future wife on AOL, and we maintained a long distance relationship over IMs for years. We celebrated our 17th anniversary a few days ago. You never know what technology will change your life.

SF Symbols in SwiftUI: Styling tricks you might have missed
YouTube video by Nil Coalescing SF Symbols in SwiftUI: Styling tricks you might have missed

I published a new video showing some lesser-known techniques for styling SF Symbols in SwiftUI, including scaling symbols relative to text, coloring them with gradients and multiple colors, and applying variants like fill or circle programmatically: youtu.be/ytUWzccgD_w

This week I’m taking my oldest to EAA AirVenture for the first time. The number of planes landing on Flightradar24 is staggering! Having never been before, I have no idea what to expect, but he’s very into aviation, so this seems like going to airplane Disneyland.

Congrats!! 🎉 I know this has been in the works for a long time, but it sure seems like it’s going to be a smooth upgrade. Looking forward to bumping my Nuxt 3 projects to the release version (and even moreso, overhauling my few Nuxt 2 projects onto it 🫣). Nuxt really is a delight to build with!

This is so well written, and accurately captures much of how I feel about these Whatever technologies and the industries that peddle them. Well done. And the “spinning whirling mass of blades” analogy made me laugh aloud and wake my spouse 😆

Planning a few-day-long summer trip to San Diego. Any recommendations for family fun with 10 & 13 year old kids?

Amid the other horror from all this, it's a damn shame about the Perfect Dark reboot being cancelled. It looked like it had promise and I was looking forward to it. :(

P. S. There's a work-in-progress decompiled pc port of the N64 original that breathes fresh life into it and is very playable.

My kids have discovered that some online games are vulnerable to turning off Wi-Fi briefly, and now I'm sharing the story of flag stealing in Halo 2 using the cable modem "standby" button. Artificial lag — a tale as old as time.

You have your ducks in a ROW? Just one row? I have my ducks in a bunch of rows and columns. A whole excel spreadsheet of ducks. Grow up. Get it together.

Apple's transcriber APIs are coming along, but if you need accurate transcription right now, I've been happily using Speechmatics' API for several years and recommend it. It returns accurate text transcripts and even detailed word-by-word timing in JSON format. It's not free, but it's very good.

My city streets are absolutely lined with protesters! I’ve never seen this many people come out for any event ever. Outstanding.

The FDAI is an octagonal instrument with a rotating ball in the center. The ball is half black and half white, with numbers and lines on it to indicate angles. Three yellow needles direct the astronauts with the desired motion. Three arrow scales on the sides show the spacecraft's roll rate in the three axes. An orange flag labeled "OFF" is visible.

When landing on the Moon, the astronauts watched an instrument called the FDAI that showed the spacecraft's orientation. The ball inside the Flight Director/Attitude Indicator rotated in three axes as the Lunar Module rotated. Let's look inside and see how it works. 1/N

It doesn‘t make any sense structurally that sidebars in Liquid Glass are in a layer above the selected content. It makes them seem more important than the content which they never are.

Still looking forward to an LLM-based Siri and future Apple Intelligence advances. Apple is in such a good position to provide useful features: powerful silicon, careful privacy consideration, and having ready access to email/messages/calendar/etc. It’s the perfect confluence of dependencies.

Regarding Tahoe’s flipped Finder icon, I might be in the minority, but I think Apple should in fact rename Finder to Files and use the Files iOS app icon or something like it. We manage files with Finder; It should be called Files. Blasphemy, I know.
