Did you know New Zealand and other south-west Pacific islands have LEAF-VEINED SLUGS?!
Unlike their omnivorous European relatives, these unique leaf-mimicking slugs eat only fungi. They breathe mainly through the skin of the back, which is kept moist by secretions passing along the many grooves! ๐งช

If you can, please plant a wildlife hedge instead of building a fence! It could help hedgehogs, hoverflies, bats, bumblebees, mice, moths, butterflies, blackbirds, frogs, fieldfares, solitary bees, squirrels...

This hoverfly can be found in Southern Europe. If you get close enough it is easy enough to identify with its yellow and black striped eyes.
If you spend any time in southern Europe next spring or summer look out for this amazing hoverfly, the Band-eyed Dronefly. Any ideas why it evolved eyes like this? I would like to know.

Todayโs #AutumnArrivalSpotlight is the Scaup, the UKโs rarest breeding duck! ๐ฆ
Numbers build in winter as birds arrive from Iceland and Scandinavia, gracing our coastal waters.
Look for their striking plumage and rounded heads as they dive in search of mussels & crustaceans.

Red soldier beetle on a pale pink umbellifer flower
Can we have a shout-out for the unsung heroes of the insect world? Hoverflies, beetles (like this red soldier beetle), moths and many other insects are important pollinators. To help them (and bees and butterflies), grow nectar-rich flowers and avoid pesticides.

A good place to see Silver-studded Blue butterflies is Prees Heath in Shropshire in June. If you find any freshly emerged specimens you may well see ants in close attendance. The larvae of this butterfly is looked after by the ants until it pupates. #butterflies

Help wildlife survive in winter:
๐ฑ Donโt cut back plants: birds feed on some seedheads
๐ง Offer fresh water: natural sources may be frozen
๐ฆ Keep a corner wild for hibernating animals
๐ Feed the birds: they lose weight quickly when itโs cold
๐ Grow ivy: itโs great for wildlife!
