Mass layoffs are underway at the nation's public health agencies Employees across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have begun receiving notices of dismissal in a major overhaul expected to ultimately lay off up to 10,000 people.

10,000 Health and Human Services employees are being laid off.

These are the people who track diseases, conduct research, make sure our food and medicine is safe, and administer health insurance for nearly half the country.
