Why emotion research is stuckβand how to move it forward
Studying how organisms infer indirect threats and understand changing contexts can establish a common framework that bridges species and levels of analysis.
My perspective in @thetransmitter.bsky.social on why emotion research feels stuck and how we might move forwardβby focusing on how the brain uses internal brain models to shape emotional processing across species. www.thetransmitter.org/emotion/why-...

Our 3D mapping reveals that the amygdala has a highly organized, hierarchical engram architecture.
01.01.2026 14:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Interestingly, we observed lots of similarities between the architecture of neurons engaged when mice recalled an aversive vs. a neutral memory, suggesting the amygdala engrams have similar architecture regardless of memory valence.
01.01.2026 14:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
At the network level, we used graph theory and found that engram ensembles are structured networks with "hub" neurons. These hubs likely function as major communication centers for efficient memory recall.
01.01.2026 14:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
At the micro-scale level, rather than being randomly distributed, we observed active neurons form tightly packed clusters. These local modules may be the building blocks that allow neurons to interact and stabilize the engram.
01.01.2026 14:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
At the meso-scale, we identified specific spatial hotspots of high engram neuron density that are differentially engaged during fear learning and retrieval across different amygdala nuclei

Body size predicts the selection of defensive behavioral strategies
Survival depends on the ability to respond appropriately to threats, yet the selection of defensive behaviors varies among individuals with distinct bβ¦
New paper from @ykneurores.bsky.social in our lab π’
We show body size predicts defensive behavioral strategy; smaller animals adopt active avoidance, larger ones favor freezing, while sex and age donβt drive the effect. A clear demonstration that traits matter.
