I left the class with the appreciation that the intentional stance, like many illusions, biases our thinking so strongly it's difficult to see through, even when we *know* it's incorrect.

We don't even see it as odd to ascribe desire to two things (computers, plants) that don't have a nervous system, much less a brain, and certainly aren't feeling any love or hate. They *do*, and they grow, and they compute, but they do not (currently) *want*.

He said we understand each other in part by ascribing beliefs and desires as hidden factors to explain each other's actions.

One of the interesting ways this plays out is in doing the same for any sufficiently complicated machine or process.

Watching all these people and news orgs talk about LLMs as if they were sentient reminds me of an experience back in my neuroscience days.

somehow there's an update... and it's not a great look. it shouldn't be the case that the admin react when there's an outcry then just don't change whatever system they've got in place anyway.
