SO sorry. It is the worst, even if it is the kindest. After we lost ours, we "established" the "Shoelace Memorial Fellowship for Cats who Can't Cat" and adopted 3 who had issues preventing their adoption. The ones we let go become part of the legacy of those we take in next.

That's a fair point. I guess I was thinking about those who struggle with making ends meet, so the threshold/barrier to entry, so to speak, is unfortunately higher.

There is an element of privilege here too. Not everyone has the luxury of staying fully engaged in politics. It's noteworthy that for these folks, energies focused on surviving have now come to encompass resistance.

So yeah everything is shit, but my honors student just discovered how incredible archivists and librarians are (They found everything I needed and just brought it to me!!) and that deserves celebrating.

This prompts me to think I should be teaching the second great awakening a bit differently in the US history survey.

Every year, I teach at least one class in a large auditorium like the one shooters targeted at Brown. And every year I worry about the risk knowing absolutely nothing will be done about it.

History professor here - AI is great for some things, particularly if you already have some expertise. It is catastrophically bad teaching deeper understanding or encouraging connection with humanity. I'm horrified by the pro-slavery AI papers I get that use wealth as the key metric.

I'm always struck by how easy it is for foreign nations (and anyone really) to exploit American racism and how some Americans consistently fall for it.

Commentary: The UC faculty just won a big court victory over Trump. But why didn't UC join their lawsuit? The UC faculty went to court to fight Trump's funding cutoffs and won. Why has the university system tried to negotiate instead?
