That's awful! What a waste of everyone's time

Oh dear... So these are papers where the data collection itself is obviously fictional?

Dumb phone sounds great! Does it do maps?

As in, 1% (or 10%) of scales are symmetric, right?

That's cool! I always thought it was canon that scales evolved to be asymmetric to aid identifiability, so it's very interesting that you've found evidence against this.

But I think we should try not to see it as a zero sum game. We humanities departments are fighting for our lives now, in a culture where arts support is constantly declining. Anything that gets the public excited about music and music research is a good thing, in my opinion.

I understand that frustration... I think the difficulty is partly that empirical work is simply better suited to news outlets: news outlets want to report facts, not opinions, and it takes work to turn opinions into facts. Science is a good way (but not the only way) of taking that step.

Max, it's not about being the first person to make the claim, it's about providing evidence that helps you resolve contradicting claims in the literature. While some people claimed that timbre affects consonance, a lot of people claimed that it didn't, and most previous studies supported the latter.

I aspired towards claiming for food but when I saw the pile of receipts at the end I was too intimidated and gave up. Never managed to spend 10,000 yen in one sitting though, that's massive

It's a big deal if this works, I'll do all my money laundering through you...

Excited for this fresh start on BlueSky, it would be great to rediscover the great academic community we used to have on Twitter. If only @davidjohnbaker.bsky.social can get the #musicscience feed to work, that'll be a good start!
