We did -- and boy, there is nothing like a fresh tomato from the backyard garden! The flavor is just amazing.

So do I! Local drought was hard on our tomatoes this year.

Chestnuts were everywhere, when I was in grade school; you could gather them as easily as you can gather acorns today; today there are none. Much like the Dutch Elm disease that wiped out the large elms that once shaded Main St in my hometown, the blight changed the entire ecosystem. 😢

This image makes me incredibly nostalgic for the late, lamented American Chestnut trees of my youth, long since gone due to the arrival of chestnut blight in North America.

My anise hyssop is like that -- the bees go crazy over it while it's blooming, but the spent blooms shatter. After the wind blows the seed all over the yard, I spend the next spring pulling out stray seedlings.

End-of-season clearances are treasure troves of plants that can be nurtured to full health, at pennies on the dollar. One of my favorite kinds of shopping sprees -- I now have close to a dozen plants to get into the ground so that they can root properly by fall. Good thing it's a long weekend!

I planted one in my increasingly native garden last spring, and it's now in full, gorgeous bloom. 💜
