02.10.2025 13:18 — 👍 14 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0The paradox of the Trump era is how bullying reflects weakness. Popular leaders don't need to intimidate urban centers. Effective authoritarians don't browbeat their military leadership en masse. Good deal-makers don't box their opponents into confrontation.

The role of Catholic and other Christian #Latinos in the election was the subject of an essay I wrote for the @kettering.org blog, suggesting that the surge of GOP support among these voters may be related to #ChristianNationalism

#Latino Catholics are interesting. The account for a plurality of the Latino vote. What determined the margin of victory for Harris among Latinos was her share among Catholics. She lost them in the NEP and lost the Latino vote, won 61% in the CES and had her best margin

Looking at the Democrats' 2024 share of the #Latino vote by religious ID shows two consistent patterns: 70%+ #secular support, and 30-ish% Protestant support. Meaning, Harris won secular Latinos handily and lost Protestants.

The surveys find that Democrats (Harris) won the overall #Latino vote, but that the GOP (Trump) gained substantially. Harris' margin ranges from +5 points (NEP) to +18 (CES); these margins are still historically low. All three polls agree that the GOP got at least 40%

My latest entry, 'Three Perspectives on the #Latino Vote' compares the findings of the NEP exit poll, the VoteCast, and the CES data comparing #secular, Catholic, and Protestant/other Christian Latinos

Opposition to fascism is, for now, apparently illegal. The intent of the EO is clearly to deter pro-democracy opposition within the civil sector. This is a scary time for nonprofits and funders but a critical time to resist and support one another. A quick thread with some resources:

24.09.2025 01:44 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0While most #secular #Latino adults say they believe in God, compared to religious Latinos, the certainty of their beliefs is pretty low. Two-thirds of religious Latinos are certain that God exists (70%). But only 28% of secular ones do, about 40% of believers

I close with some thoughts about the #BadBunny concert on Saturday night.
23.09.2025 16:39 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0#Secular #Latino adults do not practice religion; most seem to lead truly secular lives. 8/10 (81%) don't attend religious services, 7/10 (72%) don't thank God before meals, and 60% do not pray at all.
secularpolitics.us/20250923
Belief in other concepts is even lower: while 3/4 of #secular #Latino adults believe in a soul, belief in heaven (44%) and hell (36%) are much lower than the population as a whole. Only 1/5 (20%) say the Bible is important to them
