I know ableds find it hard to believe, but especially in the U.S. there is no comprehensive care for disabled adults. If you don't have family willing to care for you? You're screwed.

Being a single mom to a heart baby, a recent survivor of DV, & profoundly disabled--I feel this in my (v. fucked up) bones.

I know I have both talent and skill to benefit my community and society--I've proven that on a national stage. But we get written off as damaged goods so easily.

I'm back in contact with a HS friend who is indigenous and was taken from his mom immediately after birth. Last of the Indian School b.s, etc. I made a crack about Columbus and my friend said, "oh, was he actually super bad or something?"

They don't fund public education for a reason, y'all.

I think a major issue is how hard people fight to not identify with people in non-normative bodies. It prevents their empathy from reaching us, and stops with the closest abled person...even if that person inarguably abused me and traumatized our kid.

This week our judge told my abuser that he was in a "tough place" (unable to abandon me per law) and to "keep his chin up."

People have ALWAYS spoken like this about me.

A new character was just intro'd into the (current) #1 fandom of my pre-teen's friendgroup. He's generally assumed to be elderly, but a friend who's absorbed lots of my kid's #anti-ableism said to her: "they're only saying that because of his cane. He *could* be disabled, you know. 🙄"

My ex accused our 11yo of "cyberbullying" over a yt comment she made--on an anon account--which never even mentioned him. 😳

ANY restriction on our access to support and camaraderie and information and allyship is a blow more massive than I can really describe if you aren't already actively #anti-ableist. [7/]

Bringing it back around to my wheelhouse--social media allows disabled people to participate in activism in ways they simply cannot otherwise. The disabled community has banded together into something I wouldn't have dared DREAMED of twenty years ago. Our visibility and allyship is growing.[6/]

Social media gives us a way to start some of these conversations we aren't otherwise having. It creates access in places with horribly segregated schools. It crosses all sorts of lines--even the red ones you'd think would be gentrified out by now, but still keep us from class solidarity.

As an aside, one of my privilege bombs was learning how few white women had really close black women friends. "Oh, I have a bw friend at work," or "my neighbor is black and we chat."

This ripples out for those of us who are marginalized. In 2016 I had one of the best seats in the entire world to see a whole lot of white women react to suddenly being shown that their experience of #patriarchy was exponentially worse for others--specifically black women. [3/]

The internet breaks down the barriers of distance--but of social groupings, too. My thoughts, experience, and teachings as a #disabilityeducator have been exposed to countless people via the net who I'd just never come into contact with without the technological leaps we've made in my lifetime. There is nothing revolutionary in me stating that social media has allowed us to progress faster as a society; it can be as simple as the fact that in any given moment there are more conversations happening than at any other time in history. More information is being shared each moment.
