Since everyone has Frankenstein on the brain: more people should read Ahmed Sadaawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad.

I can't speak for anybody else, but for me, sometimes the whole executive dysfunction thing can get bad enough that I wrap all the way back around to being productive. I once wrote four hundred lines of code while procrastinating on the act of putting on a shirt.

(Should probably clarify that by "ironically", I am referring to the fact that The Archive Undying deals heavily in, as one character calls it, "fondling each other's neurons", which is also, incidentally, one of the top 10 quotes from anything I've read.)

Probably THUD by @terrypratchett.bsky.social when I was 13. THE ARCHIVE UNDYING by @emcandon.bsky.social did it much more recently, ironically.

The Joyce Carol Oates and โ€œbooks written between 1890-1930 are so ALPHAโ€ thing struck home because it showed how many elites nowadays lack the ability to be moved or find meaning in art beyond what we did watching John Wick and going fuck yea this rules and that explains why they believe in AI art

In the Discworld Clacks board game, you play as the bad guys of the book it's based on ("Going Postal"). It makes the game mechanics as-is more fun, but it's still strange!

It sure is interesting how many "polite" euphemisms loop back around to being racist!

There really is no one involved at any point in the development of these tools who actually understands what they're doing, huh?

Sometimes you've got to accept that if you don't understand what people are talking about, the conversation isn't for you. Even if someone is kind enough to stop and educate you, you can't reasonably expect to have an opinion worth listening to about a topic you didn't know existed five minutes ago.

8 panel comic

P1: A title panel; borderless. We see a highly stylised --and decidedly grompy looking-- frog sitting atop a lily pad. The overly exuberant title above them reads "Hello! FREG!"

P2: A close up on Freg, as their mouth opens slightly, a look of realisation on their face. The text reads: "Oh! Freg has something to say!"

P3 & 4: Back to the POV form the first panel, as Freg gradually hinges open their jaw impossibly wide, almost 180 degrees.

P4: We dolly back, as an absolute ream of text spews forth from the open mouth.

"Jumping no longer elicits the feeling of sheer joy in me like it did, once upon a time. However, jump I MUST, because what else can I do? You ask my, why, then, would I continue to jump? Dear reader, you may as well ask me the same of breathing."

"To not jump is to admit defeat. To give up entirely."

P6: We switch to a dramatic low angle, with a fish lens effect, as Freg stares up at the sky, which is filled with cotton candy clouds.

P7: Freg --saying "I must away"-- "jumps" off the pad. I say "jumps" because Freg looks like they are simply being dragged by a computer mouse into the air.

P8: We end on a borderless panel, far back from the lily pad. The only sign Freg existed are a few ripples in the water around the pad.

The LLM thing is remarkable because if anyone was like "I never went to medical school anyway here's my magic anti disease device pls give 100 billion" they'd be laughed out the room or beaten with sticks but we're supposed to let guys who never read a book hand us an app claiming it'll write them

I call my Site Director and ask, while it's very dramatic how we always close the innermost blast doors first and work outward, thus allowing escaping subjects to slip through each one just as it slams shut, wouldn't it be more effective to close the outermost ones first? I am immediately [REDACTED]

Elon Musk on data centers in orbit: โ€œSpaceX will be doing thisโ€ โ€œWe could see another transformation of whatโ€™s done in space.โ€โ€ฆ

Ok this (arstechnica.com/space/2025/1...) is an amazing example of the kind of BS hype tech writing we see so much, because even I, a lowly historian, can see the Obvious Problems with 'space data centers' that the article by a journalist at a technical publication failed to ask.

I (accidentally) went on a streak of reading only science fiction written by women and it took me a while to notice I was doing it, because it didn't require any active effort to find books like that. An ocean of new releases too, not just Shelley and LeGuin.

Every time I sit down to write a piece I feel certain that I would rather die than actually write it and yet somehow I would rather die ten times harder before I ever let the word machine write for me.
