If you Google my name, one of the first things that comes up is that i’m a survivor. It’s not nice.

I couldn’t get justice for myself. if women who have experienced something similar are better placed to then waiving my right to anonymity was worth it.

My greatest hope in speaking out was that other women wouldn’t have to go through what I did and watch sexually violent men walk free without consequence. That people would understand why that creating that offence was so important.

It sounds like it has helped.

Non-fatal strangulation became a specific offence in England and Wales on 7th June 2022, as part of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021.

It is quite something to hear that this change in law has made a difference.

A bit choked up. Someone I know, socially, who is a police officer dealing with SV/DA cases has just told me that she deals with cases that come under the offence of non-fatal strangulation on a daily basis.

I was one of the women who spoke out to show why this law was needed.

I’d like to be in a space where, as a survivor, I can speak freely without men threatening me with further violence but receiving no consequences for it.

The normalisation of extreme and violent speech is concerning: speech isn’t truly “free” if it causes others to feel scared/threatened.
