The Chukchi Sea is approaching ice-over, though substantial areas of now disconnected open water remain. With colder weather this week, ice will grow. Ice is also growing out from the coast in the Bering Sea, and ice extent is near the 1991-2020 median for the end of November. #akwx #Arctic #seaIce

The NSF Bio Anthro Program DDRIG, Cultural Anthrpology DDRIG, and Archaeology DDRIG have all been archived (as of yesterday afternoon). Please speak with your grad students and plan accordingly. To say I am angry and depressed about this is an understatement.

NOAA cancels funding for data collection crucial to tsunami warning systems The Alaska Earthquake Center has long provided NOAA with seismic data for tsunami monitoring and warning purposes. That work will wind down in November, after the federal agency said it can no longer ...

Because of NOAA funding cuts, #AlaskaEarthquakeCenter is "not going to continue operating those stations in the Aleutians that are entirely NOAA-supported."

What are we going to do? We need every seismic monitoring station we can get! #AlaskaQuake #AlaskaSky

In rural America, public radio saves lives In remote Alaska, public radio station KYUK is crucial during natural disasters. Without federal funding, how will it survive?

First, an earthquake hit Alaska. Then it was a typhoon. People turned to public radio for lifesaving information. Sen. Lisa Murkowski tried to get her colleagues to understand the importance of stations.

They voted to defund public media anyway.

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between October and January by looking at the decadal average line positions.

Alaska owns dozens of deteriorating schools. Now it wants under-resourced districts to take them on Rural school district superintendents are trying to “find the best, most optimal use of very lean resources.” Taking on the state’s unmaintained buildings, they say, will only increase their burden.

This is outstanding reportage of a uniquely Alaskan problem. www.kyuk.org/public-safet...

EPA moves to limit scope of clean water law NATIONRule could cut Clean Water Act protections for wetlands.Associat

EPA's new "Waters of the United States" rule will limit #CleanWaterAct jurisdiction to "relatively permanent, standing or continuously flowing bodies of water... [and] wetlands that are connected to such bodies of water."

Another dataset confirms that last month was the warmest October on record in the #Arctic. The previous record was 2024. This is already a month with a very large increasing temperature trend (i.e., Arctic amplification). Not good.
