π For book historian Allie Alvis (@book-historia.bsky.social), preserving rare books isnβt just about the objectsβitβs about telling their stories. Alvis brings those hidden histories to life through social media, informing & entertaining a growing audience.β blog.archive.org/2025/04/09/v...

How Digital Archivists Are Saving Public Information from the Memory Hole
β‘οΈ spectrum.ieee.org/digital-arch...
I love libraries and archives and museums. To read about the history of work to maintain libraries and share histories I suggest you skip my piece and just go buy this book (or! request it at your local library!) but if you need to be convinced, here:

It's #dpc #digitalpreservation #ff Follow Friday. This week a simple reflection. Data has never mattered more, and never more fragile. #DPC and the #digipres community have expertise and contacts that will help with that. Spread the word and save the bits.
14.02.2025 13:21 β π 11 π 11 π¬ 0 π 0That sounds like simultaneously a lot - because it will take such a load off and be such a reliefβ¦ _and_ not a lot at all because it will only help with a small part of the load you are currently carrying. Take care, and enjoy breathing.
13.02.2025 21:35 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Love my job. Love all the ethical questioning it swims in. Love that it is so embedded in society. Love that it is about public and common good. Love that its independence is a sign of a working democracy.
#Archivist
This post by a former NARA employee is good, outlining some of its powers and responsibilities.
I knew that NARA administered the Electoral College. Thereβs a lot of similarly important stuff.
It will *not be good* for the next Archivist of the United States to be a Trump stooge.
On you go.
Iβd read it!
So, the issues of preservation of records, evidence and memory have arrived already.

It includes an image of a middle aged, bearded white man in chunky futuristic armour, sitting at a desk lit by some sort of electrical / lava lamp things. A severed hand in a jar of liquid is on the desk. This is unusual in an archive and might be better in a museum collection. The Overwhelmed Archivist is quoted as saying "Bah! As if I had time to preserve everything", suggesting that he needs to spend more time on appraisal and less on accumulating random body parts.
