Inspired by a convo last weekend, I wanted to make this post just so people knew why I did what I did. The conviction came from the notion that it was all bigger than me.

Ideally, I’d be a forgotten footnote: “First to do it, but contribution pales in comparison to everyone else”

This was not an outcome I predicted. Naive, I know. Even if I knew it was possible, I’m an optimist, so I would have done it exactly the same.

Maybe there will be a day where being there does not remind me of that or I’m bothered by it less, but I doubt it.

If anyone reading this is compelled to chase it, that’s great. I’m happy that you had what I did. It was super rewarding for me. Only one person should feel how I do and that’s me.

If anything, I’m damn good at implementing and executing a long game.

Maybe folks are missing some piece of that formula.

The obvious answer is they don’t care and that’s why I’m sad. That’s why I don’t give a shit about the PT. Those aren’t my people.

I’m a unique case, I get that. I came from nothing, so I’m not afraid of losing it all. Two of my mentors were folks that could see anything was possible, even if it meant rules had to be broken.

I have privilege and I see the power that comes with that. I see the power of having a platform.

To be clear, there is no shortage of folks in the MTG space doing similar things, but I’m specifically speaking to the leverage held by pro players.

Think of how many trophies or other pieces of memorabilia are collecting dust on shelves that could be used to add real, tangible good in the world.

I don’t regret anything I’ve done, nor do I think I’m done doing that sorta stuff, but there is a certain amount of sadness when everything goes accordingly to plan but fails to meet the ultimate goal.

It doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth doing, just that I have given up on it inspiring people.

I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want folks to do it for the wrong reasons. It made more sense for it to happen organically than for people to feel pressured into it. I wanted folks to do it, but because they /wanted/ to. That would ensure longevity.

Instead, I’m just sad.

Have not said this publicly really, but the real reason I did charity auctions, protest, etc was to hopefully inspire others to do the same. That was the plan very early and it failed.

Can you imagine? The hype around the shit I was doing as an individual, except we had five people? Ten? More?

I sat down and they both shut the fuck up immediately.
