Russia can probably continue waging war for the foreseeable future. But every additional year at this altitude raises systemic risk: of fiscal crisis, of institutional breakdown, of damage so severe that no post-war policy can repair it.

A picture is worth 1000 words...

This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK.

Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect.

Chapeau!

1. Maduro is not a good guy by any stretch of the imagination.
2. But capturing him through an extra-legal action that violates international law undermines any US credibility with Russia in Ukraine and China with Taiwan.
3. We have a terrible history with topping leaders without a post-war plan.

Trump says Venezuela sends US lethal drugs, but data tells different story President Trump says destroying drug boats is saving Americans' lives. But Venezuela is linked to cocaine, which is far less deadly than fentanyl.

Fun fact:

"U.S. and United Nations drug data, however, show that Venezuela isn't a producer or exporter of fentanyl, a lab-made synthetic opioid, and that it plays a relatively minor role in the far-less-lethal cocaine trade."

Europe’s generals are warning people to prepare for war But western European societies are in denial

European governments are beginning to respond to warnings about the possibility of a war with Russia. But few of the continent’s western countries have anything comparable to the war readiness of the Nordics, Baltics and Poland

Cheap Solar Is Transforming Lives and Economies Across Africa

“Over the past decade, while the United States ramped up fossil fuel exports, China has focused on dominating renewables. Today, Chinese companies make so many of the world’s solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries that they are slashing prices and scrambling to find buyers.” Gift link:

40 percent of MRI signals misinterpreted Interpretation of numerous MRI data may be incorrect: blood flow is not a reliable indicator of brain activity.

"40 percent of MRI signals do not correspond to actual brain activity"; "Since tens of thousands of fMRI studies worldwide are based on this assumption, our results could lead to opposite interpretations in many of them.”

🧵1/12: Russia’s economy hasn’t collapsed, but it is suffering immensely. It still runs, but only because the central bank keeps it alive with constant REPO liquidity. What was once emergency support is now the daily operating system.
