Hi, I'm Griffin! I make videos about linguistics on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube (@w0rdsatw0rk). I'm particularly interested in sociolinguistics, and wrote my thesis about language attitudes in Esperanto! Check it out @ griffinbassett.com :-)

A map of Chicago's 77 community areas, with the ones I've visited so far labeled in orange.

I've been trying to visit all of Chicago's 77 community areas! Here's where I'm at so far.

There's a lot of gaps I'd like to fill; I'm hoping to see Little Village/La Villita (South Lawndale), Back of the Yards (New City), and Chatham soon. #chicago

...I might have an answer. Long story short, it's language attitudes: people have been drawn to EO since its inception because learning the language is how you enter its community.

EO is inextricable from its internationalist philosophy, and this has driven its speakers to keep it alive.

A lot of people say Esperanto is "Eurocentric" - and they're right! For a "universal language," it's not very well designed. But why is it still by far the most popular constructed language on the planet?
