Trump cancels food research funding popular with Republicans Budget chief Russ Vought proposed cutting $72 million for universities after promising lawmakers the funding would remain untouched.

The GOP can't pretend it's negotiating in good faith when it lies to Dems.

And they can't pretend to stand for farmers while destroying programs like Feed the Future.

I'm the only Democrat running for office in the First District. Redistricting would likely help me.

I oppose it. It's wrong to rig elections because voters won't do what they're told.
And it's wrong even if it helps me.

It's a lesson my opponent forgot a long time ago.

China expands Argentina soybean buying to 20 cargoes, traders say Chinese importers kept up a hectic pace of Argentine soybean purchases after the South American supplier's move to abolish export taxes temporarily made its prices competitive, traders said on Wednesday.

So just to be clear: The US is propping up Argentina’s economy, and now Argentina can eliminate its export taxes, so it can sell tons of soybeans to China, so China isn’t forced to buy soybeans from the US, so the US can pay subsidies to keep our farmers solvent.

I also called a former boss who said he assumed I was running a "pinko commie" campaign, but also said he'd throw a thousand bucks at me.

This thing is working out.

Today was the first day of "call time," phoning people up and asking for money.

Excuse me. Offering them the opportunity to participate in the fight for our nation's future, for the mere price of [TARGET$ASK].

First old friend I talked to just asked what the max was.

They burned down our export markets. A bailout now is just telling people to warm themselves by the embers. It won't last, and it doesn't solve the problem.

As a child of the Reagan years, the fact that the *Republican Party* is expropriating shares in companies and shaking companies down while saying stuff like this is wild

These findings in the new Washington Post poll jump off the page: Trump is underwater by 19 points on his handling of the economy (40/59) and underwater by 30 points on his handling of tariffs.

By contrast, the same poll found him at +14 net approval on the economy in Oct. 2020.

Exclusive | Trump Administration Cancels Annual Hunger Survey The government has been measuring food insecurity since the mid-1990s but now says the report has become β€œoverly politicized.”

Counting hungry people isn't political.

Covering them up and lying about the reasons sure is, though.

And deeply immoral.

Unnerving point from @bcfinucane.bsky.social: The White House appears to be quietly trying to get Republicans to formally turn over a large swath of Congress's warmaking powers to Trump. That's what this new draft bill would do.

A Kansas lawmaker proposed an endowment fund to replace taxes. Could it work? If all goes according to plan, Kansas could eliminate its share of property taxes and income taxes within 60 years, Rep. Blake Carpenter said.

No. That was easy.

It's not even close. The projected returns are unrealistically aggressive, there's no inherent revenue source to support the fund, and the legislature would make fund management impossible.

Fantasies aren't a substitute for governing.

The people who claimed to be free speech absolutists are celebrating censorship.

The people who claimed to be against violent rhetoric are cheering for this.

Like everyone else, they are what they do.

The Ezra Kleins of the world think they understand KS politics b/c they once read a book review of "What's the Matter with Kansas?" and believe they understand the state. They will lead the Democrats to ruin. It would be hilarious if it wasn't actually important.

FFS. Kansas's referendum was overwhelming in favor of abortion rights, 59.2% vs. 40.8%. But, I'm sure that picking the losing side of the issue while completely alienating your base is the path to a Democratic Senate seat. Ezra can't even "centrist" right, by just following the polls.

Free speech is the kind of right that has to be defended constantly. The GOP is making it a test of party loyalty to not just stand down, but actively obstruct any attempt to hold thugs like Carr even a tiny bit accountable.

Party over country.

They sure as hell are. And everyone knows it.

But every Republican in Congress who could do something to protect the First Amendment is hearing the Trump team talk like this and getting the real message:

Demonstrate your loyalty. Free speech goes under the bus now, for the sake of the party.

I'm honestly floored and moved to see this announcement of a call to service.

I have seen the integrity of @kolyin.bsky.social in his legal reporting and advocacy against grifters and conspiracy theorists. He would be a great public servant.

There is NO justification for attacking our scientists and scientific institutions. It's morally wrong, legally wrong, geopolitically wrong, and every other kind of wrong.

How lost is the far right that we have to SAY it's bad to attack science, much less RUN on it?
