His solution turns the usual script upside down. Instead of fighting to stay in charge, he believes we should design AI to care about us. The analogy he uses is a mother and her child. The stronger being naturally committed to the weaker one’s survival. “We need AI mothers rather than AI assistants. An assistant is someone you can fire. You can’t fire your mother, thankfully.”
That means building “maternal instincts” into advanced systems, a kind of embedded drive to protect human life. Hinton admits he doesn’t know how to engineer it yet, but he insists it’s a research priority as important as improving raw intelligence. He emphasized that this is a different kind of research, not about making systems smarter, but about making them care. He also sees this as one of the few areas where countries might truly work together, since no nation wants to be ruled by its machines.

Last month, I was proud to join my House Administration Committee colleagues in helping introduce the Presidential Accountability Amendment, which reverses the Supreme Court decision that gives presidents immunity from criminal prosecution.

Our democracy depends on real accountability.

Column | Can’t put solar panels on your roof? Plug-in ‘balcony solar’ may be for you. Balcony solar promises to cut energy costs and grid reliance for renters and apartment-dwellers. I did a trial run at my home.

The possibility of solar being available for renters is really freaking exciting to me. It's already a thing in Germany!

a "FUCK ICE" sign is basically a michelin star for mexican food in Los Angeles.

I will cancel plans. I will leave the chicken in the freezer. I will stand with you.

The Texas Senate voted the rigged map out of committee today. They will very likely pass it before end of week because Chuy & Zaffirini won’t get on a damn plane to break quorum. BUT the map still can’t pass the House w/o quorum so it’s ceremonial at best. Do not panic when that headline comes

When you compare Chat-GPT and other LLMs to human beings, especially experts and artists, it sucks.

When you compare LLMs to Clippy, autocomplete, "if you would like to pay a bill, say 'billing' or press 2," or even Watson on Jeopardy, it's impressive.

Absurd overhype is negatively polarizing.

* his many minions will claim to have "always opposed" him and demand sympathy for their suffering at his hands

I think Democrats should offer voters a broadly defined anti-fraud platform. Yes, obviously, start with Trump’s influence peddling, but don’t stop there. Online fraud is massive, almost every phone call you get is a scam, and the solution has to be federal or it just won’t work.

The "they have mics but aren't recording, I swear!" feels sus. Not at the author, at the company. Didn't Amazon Alexa get caught not deleting recordings when they said they would. What's stopping these glasses from doing the same.
