I honestly don’t think people are paying attention enough to the Van Der Beek case because they assume a celebrity who can’t afford their own care must have been irresponsible with their money.

All this is to say, your own personal assets will mean something way different if you have great health insurance (that you can keep without working), guaranteed pensions, free education for your kids, stable affordable housing, unemployment protections...

These thoughts also came from wondering why it was so accessible for politicians to express care about wealthbuilding and the wealth gap. (back when they did for a moment). as compared to what other types of programs that they could be supporting otherwise?

compared to the insecurity of illiquid assets like equity in a home you probably need to live in, unless you cash it out as a loan. which is not only debt but also a bet on your home values continuing to increase. which in turn depends on other components that are ultimately corrosive to society.

and RIP my destroyed Twitter archive, but I miss a thread about conversations w/ white friends describing the stability that came from family member’s union jobs that sustained whole branches of the family with their health insurance and pensions

I’ve been thinking (thanks to a well-timed @keeanga.bsky.social question at an online event) about how the idea of “wealth” is itself serving as the individualized “solution” rationalizing destruction of social supports.
“wealthbuilding” not insurance, not benefits, not pensions, not public housing

while it can be leveraged, while it’s far far higher than Black and Latinx wealth, etc., isn’t cancer money. bc catastrophes can far exceed our ability to save. ****which is why we had social safety nets****
