Jafar Panahi’s Cannes Triumph Sends a Warning to Authoritarians Everywhere The Iranian director’s Palme d’Or-winning thriller, β€œIt Was Just an Accident,” set the tone for a festival defined by dramas of political resistance.

Jafar Panahi's Palme d'Or winner, IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, is now playing in New York and Los Angeles theatres. A film of blistering rage and implacable moral authority, in which Panahi's presence, experience and courage are stamped into every frame: www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Was lucky enough to catch Setting when they came through SF in May '24, and have been thinking about that show (and listening to all their live releases on bandcamp) ever since

Got to see 'em yesterday at HSB and at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit on Wednesday! Coming to the scene later in life, it's been great to be able to see folks like Peter Rowan still around and playing. First time I caught DSO (at the Warfield), they had him front an acoustic first set; fantastic!

recently they've they've hidden reviews by default (tho not overall rating, sigh), which makes it slightly less terrible. i've been reluctantly using it for tracking the last couple of years, and do like it for that enough to put up with the ridiculousness

Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. Our Democracy is under attack. Threats to free expression are rising. Dissent is being criminalized. Institutions and media have been recast as mouthpieces of propaganda.

This Fall, we are activating a nationwide wave of creative resistance. Beginning November 21–22, 2025, galleries, museums, libraries, comedy clubs, theaters, and concert halls across the country will host exhibitions, performances, and public events that channel the urgency of this moment. Fall of Freedom is an open invitation to artists, creators, and communities to take partβ€”and to celebrate the experiences, cultures, and identities that shape the fabric of our nation.

Art matters. Artists are a threat to American fascism.

Invitation to friends in the arts. I'm part of a group organizing a project called Fall of Freedom. We want artists and orgs of all kinds (whether you're an Indie bookstore, a cinema, gallery, whatever) to come together to resist authoritarianism. Starting November 21st...

There's a great chance to see some aurora tonight! A few tips for the casual observer in this thread.

First off, this forecast shows potential overhead aurora (green band) and the edge of where you might be able to see it near the horizon (green line)

Math.PI - JavaScript | MDN The Math.PI static data property represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, approximately 3.14159.

Ο€ is irrational, which means `Math.PI` is only an approximation, the closest JavaScript number (IEEE 754 64-bit float) to Ο€

Now that JavaScript has BigInts I propose that we should add a constant `BigInt.PI`, the closest BigInt to Ο€. For symmetry

Film review by Jorge Luis Borges of KING KONG (1933): King Kong: A monkey fourteen meters high (some of his fans say fifteen) is obviously charming, but perhaps that is not enough. This monkey is not full of juice; he is a dried out and dusty contraption with angular, clumsy movements. His only virtue-his height-seems not to have greatly impressed the photographer, who persists in not shooting him from below but from above, a plainly mistaken angle that invalidates and annuls his tallness. It should be added that he is hunchbacked and bowlegged, features that also shorten him. To ensure that there is nothing extraordinary about him, they make him fight monsters far stranger than he and find him lodgings in fake caverns the size of a cathedral, where his hard-won stature is lost. A carnal or romantic love for Miss Fay Wray brings to perfection the ruin of this gorilla and of the film as well.

This was such a fun show! I feel lucky he's been making the Chapel (a 10min walk for me) his SF home of late; got to see him do that Syd Barrett show last year. For the Beefheart songs, Allyson Baker (I think?) joined on electric guitar, adding angular textures while Robyn gave his all on vocals

Toolmen Even the best weapon is an unhappy tool.
