The new @nivenj1.bsky.social novel is a brutal, compulsive experience. Laugh out loud funny (all the more so because you do so against your own best instincts), it is also a proper Glasgow West End novel.

Had a marvellous 36 hours in Belfast. What a wonderfully odd city it is. Hills in the distance, a cocktail stick for a church spire, and a peace wall that still divides the communities. Troubling!

They’ll be dancing on the streets of Roman Glass after yesterday’s cup result. Hope they’re wearing shoes.

Thirteen novels, eleven publishers, nine nationalities, seven women, six men, five Brits, four books under 200 pages, three Fabers, two debutants ... and one dud.

My rundown of a quietly solid Booker Prize 2025 longlist:

So much better than jobbing professional readers.

Have been loving listening to @tiffanyjenkins.bsky.social read the audiobook of Strangers and Intimates. You get so much more nuance when an author reads their own work.
