Most of the citizenry are relieved that they will soon be safe. But there are small communities of (peaceful) undead who have been part of the kingdom and will be destroyed if the ritual is completed.

D&D adventure idea:
A kingdom is under attack by an undead monstrosity. People are panicking. Conventional means of stopping it have failed. The royal mages have a final solution: a powerful ritual that will dispell the animating necrotic energy of all the undead in the kingdom.

If only there was a free-play open world mode where you can just drive around and don't have to worry about racing and such.

Last night I dreamt that ICE was rolling around the city with buses collecting all non-citizens. So all the dads organized to play catch with their kids in the streets at the entrances of the neighborhood 24/7 so they could give warning of ICE's movements and slow them down.

But even the greatest instrument on the planet is just a noisemaker without the right music. Fortunately Bach's composition here corrects everything I complained about last time. It feels dynamic, expressive, alive. It's a 300 year old piece that transcends its age. Who couldn't love this?

The instrument does a lot here. Organs are powerful. A good organ isn't just a keyboard and pipes, it's a whole room. You listen to the music from *inside* the instrument itself. It is a sound big enough to scoop you up and carry you like a baby. I love me an organ.

This week I've been listening to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D. Over and over and over. Probably everyone on the planet knows at least some of it. "The vampire music," my daughter calls it. Dark and moody but energetic. Catchy and moving.

I'm listening to Toccata and Fugue in D today because I do love an organ.

I don't want to spend forever deep diving into the entire Bach library right now but if you can suggest a few specific pieces I'd be thrilled to add them to the list!

Admittedly my lists for the Romantic and Modern periods got a little out of hand. But I'm open to revising as I go.

Is the gist of your suggestion that I should have more than 4 pieces from Bach before moving on? Currently the Brandenburg Concertos are number 3 on my playlist.

I think I'm doing what you propose, more or less. I have 3 Baroque composers (Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi) with 4 pieces for each. Hopefully this will provide a feel for the musical landscape of the period and the development of each artist. Then I'll do the same with the Classical period.

Unfortunately I think parts 2 and 4 get buried by the repeating phrases and mechanical delivery of parts 3 and 5. Maybe it's supposed to show creative variations in a simple pattern but to me it felt like a commercial jingle getting hammered into my ears. Especially with part 5's length.

I start with Bach's Toccata in G Minor, written in 1710.

The piece is divided into 5 parts. 1, 3, and 5 have a quick pace. 2 and 4 are slower and flowy. I quite liked the moodiness of 2 and 4. There's flexibility and space in them that carries me.

The plan is to listen to each piece of music, paying close attention to it, and write down my feelings. This is mostly for myself, to grow a familiarity with classical music. But it'll also be public. Maybe you'll want to listen too. Or maybe you'll teach me something about a composer.

So I made an independent study course in music appreciation for myself.

I have 118 pieces, representing the most important work of 32 composers over the past 300 years. Composers are sorted by period and, within that, arranged alphabetically. Pieces files under composers chronologically.

I've been exposed to a fair amount of classical music but, aside from bits used in Loony Tunes cartoons, I've not paid much attention to them. I don't think I could distinguish a Haydn from a Brahms. But there's music that would mean a lot to me if I /really/ listened to it.
