No, they played us. This unfolded at the direction of @schumer.senate.gov. Schumer’s no vote was performative. The 8 yes votes are the sacrificial Dems who aren’t at risk next year. The GOP promise of a “vote by Dec” on ACA subsidies is meaningless. Dem leadership knows this. Calculated cowardice.

Sadly, no. It’s just politics. He’s been in these waters for a long time. He knows how to get things done and how to manipulate votes. He’s not a helpless bystander. Similar to how certain Republicans have deals to take turns voting no to look good to constituents, but still pass the legislation.

Schumer’s job is to hold the line. When he had Dems flip, he either agreed to the flips and kept his hands clean in an empty useless gesture with that “no,” or he is such a weak leader that he couldn’t muster the support he needed and control the Dem minority. He is responsible and complicit.
