I've been dreading asking this, but should I engage my inner yt boi and start something podcast-esque? Like, not a podcast, but small reels every now and then with commentary and analysis on politics? Been thinking about how to talk about BC's LNG kick as it relates to South Korea, for example.

Today Premier Eby said passing Bill 31 is "non-negotiable."

That there are so many people who see it as a patriotic duty to defend Carney no matter what he does really shows how primed Canada is for authoritarianism right now.

Back-End Volunteer Roles with Community Food Support Community Food Support delivers 80+ food hampers to families across Lekwungen territory for free every week. This work cannot be done without the work of our incredible back-end volunteers! Many of our back-end volunteers are over capacity and we need to onboard new volunteers to be able to continue the food delivery program. If you support our mission or have been considering volunteering, now is the time to help us out!

What does being a Back-End volunteer involve? There are many different roles. Each role has multiple people on a team so that no one person is taking on all the work, and so folks can take breaks. These roles are independently completed on your own time, usually online with Slack and email. Back-end volunteers attend two organizing meetings online per month (Monday evenings), if they are available, or read the minutes and report back in Slack. Meeting Coordinators Responsibilities: * Create meeting agenda * Facilitate bi-weekly meetings * Create Google Meets for meeting and post meeting reminders on Slack * Take notes during the meetings and share them in Slack Time-Commitment: * 0.5 hour/bi-weekly * An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings Accessibility Info/Experience: * Is an online role (computer needed), with potential for in-person summer meetings * Requires use of Slack and email * Requires availability briefly on Sunday and for an hour every other Monday eve * Requires taking initiative, but others are always happy to provide direction

Community Food Support is desperately seeking more Back-End Volunteers to keep the program alive.

We deliver 80+ free food hampers to recipients in #YYJ each week from the Quadra Village Community Centre gym, but much takes place behind the scenes beforehand to make that possible.

Where can this be watched? Not seeing anything on the BC Assessment website at a cursory glance.

The Bylaw for the 2026-2028 Permission Tax Exemption was up for ratification, but Coleman and Kim (me) left the room for conflict of interest reasons, so I have no idea how that went down. I assume it passed in whatever form it passed in.

Staff: The project relies mostly on bike parking. Believe there is no single-occupancy parking spot.

A kajillion things up for consideration on the consent agenda. Only the bylaw for 937 View St's housing agreement is pulled off by Hammond. "The application proposes to secure all 266 dwelling units as rental in perpetuity."

Mayor often says during her land acknowledgments that she hopes we take a moment to observe something everyday, even something small and personal, to appreciate the land we're on. Seeing Elder George's impact, Mayor Alto remarks indeed how easy it is to find these little moments in our City.

Apparently you can hear Elder George's voice pronouncing sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ at the library when you walk in.

Culturally, there is a four year mourning period for a member of his stature.

"He will continue to be a teacher to many of us."

Daytime Council begins, with Mayor Alto reaffirming the loss of Elder Dr Elmer Seniemten George. She says he was the last fluent speaker of Lekwungen. He translated the Douglas Treaties into SENĆOŦEN, and has had a key role in the renaming of Su'it St and naming the sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ Library branch.

Motion arising passes unanimously.

We move onto the rest of the COTW meeting, which is basically adjournment. Moving onto Daytime Council after a brief break.

Kim: Including Office of Housing Advocate?

Mayor: Yup.

Thompson: can this go to federal government, FCM, UBCM, etc?

Mayor: Oh, yes.

Loughton: "We need to make sure they're footing the bill... we're doing this because we have to, but we don't want to, and it needs to go back to the jurisdictional level responsible."

Loughton: Telling anecdote about how municipalities across Canada are all struggling with taking on this work without tacitly letting the Province abdicate their responsibility.

Caradonna: "We would happy to go back to building playgrounds and fixing potholes." speaking to the Province and that they should feel free to take it over

Mayor: "Echoing all that. Anyone else?"

Motion to receive this update report has passed unanimously.

Caradonna raises a motion arising: "That Council direct the Mayor to share this report with Island Health, the ministries of housing and health, and the Premier's office."

Mayor: "Happy to 2nd that."

Mayor Alto: "I think that this is an intriguing pilot because we needed to provide proof of concept." Should also be self-evident that it's not local government's problem. But now we have the potential for others to see the success for this type of model.

Gardiner: Shameful that other governments and organizations aren't doing their job. "This is also a time when this Council should be advocating for BCH, with the assistance of IH, to convert the supportive housing in this city to therapeutic or transition housing." Close to 1000 people. Duty of BC.

Coleman: "There will be an abrasive edge to conversations as we move forward.... but it's critical work." "Patience is the companion of wisdom."

Coleman: "It fills a void we've had for about 25 years. We've never had a concrete version of what that diversion cost is, but this is it, and it's tough, and it changes every couple of months. As things change...."

Coleman: "This is gritty, gutty, not always happy discussions that we go through on this. But it's critically important we begin to understand the process that society is made better by these sorts of diversion programs."

Caradonna says he's still waiting for apologias from these agencies.

Caradonna says he wants to acknowledge mistakes made and lessons learned from this pilot, and says "I hold my hands up as someone who's learned from this." The reason we made mistakes is because this isn't actually our work and Island Health and BC Housing aren't fulfilling their mandates.

Loughton emphasizes listening to SOLID's expertise and concludes with a big thank you to staff Director Rantucci. [Remember I started this long play by play with saying we love Director Rantucci?]
