YouTube video by ZoΓ« Garbett A Green Mayor for Hackney - We Need You to Make History

We love Hackney, but it needs to work for all of us.

Rising rents. Mouldy homes. Foodbanks.

ZoΓ« Garbett is running Mayor of Hackney to change that - with Dylan as Deputy.

But we need YOU.

A β€œworst-case scenario” famine is unfolding in Gaza according to experts.

The World Food Programme says Gaza needs to be flooded with 'large-scale food aid' to β€œprevent mass starvation”.

Now is the time for the UK government, and others, to ACT. There is no more time to waste.

Hackney Council is proposing A borough-wide Additional HMO Licensing Scheme and a Selective Licensing Scheme for privately rented properties in 17 out of 21 wards.
Hackney Greens support these schemes but are pushing for stronger protections:
1. Set Fees High - reinvest money to increase enforcement
2. No Discounts - Except if this save renters money
3. No Postcode Lottery - all wards should be covered
4. Strong enforcement - zero tolerance to breaches
5. Make repairs fast - set clear timeframes for repairs
6. Ditch the stigma - remove 'anti social behaviour'

A decent home should be the baseline, not the exception.

No one should be worried about eviction just for asking for a working boiler or a mould-free home. Landlord licensing is an essential tool to hold landlords to a higher standard.

Introducing a supportive amendment to a motion titled: "Together Against Violence against women and girls" @zoegarbett.bsky.social highlighted the need to address misogyny and hate towards women and wanted it noted that Metropolitan police has been found to be institutionally misogynist.

Cllr @zoegarbett.bsky.social also pushed the Mayor on what she's done to push for rent controls. The speaker didn't allow a supplementary question about why the deputy mayor has failed to respond to the concerns about disrepair at Fellows Court that affects private renters.

🫠 Jon Cunliffe's review into the water sector deliberately left out the option of public ownership.

πŸ’Έ The only way to stop millions of pounds being siphoned off for huge CEO salaries and shareholder dividends is to end the scam of privatised water.

🀝 Public ownership now.

The proscription of Palestine Action is absurd in the face of this government’s straightforward collaboration with the genocide in Gaza.

They are terrified of how many people are taking to the streets every week in opposition.

This is exactly why we need to keep pushing.

Stop scapegoating migrants.

Once responsible for housing in this country, he could have built more social homes, ended right to buy, brought in rent controls...

The housing system needs a total rethink to become centred on providing truly affordable homes & not landlord profits.

Being on the side of renters is good for everyone - and here is the evidence to prove it.

New research from @cep-lse.bsky.social finds neighbourhoods with higher short-term renting have:
- ⬆️ feelings of loneliness;
- ⬇️ neighbourhood quality;
- ⬇️ charitable organisations.

Affordability has lost all meaning when social rent is lumped together with shared ownership & London Living Rent. Glad the Mayor agrees with me, it’s time we put social housing front and centre, not buried under the vague banner of β€œgenuinely affordable”

We need a maximum working temperature Every summer, temperatures are rising and working in prolonged heat and sun can be dangerous. It can cause a number of health concerns, from dehydration and dizziness to the most serious of illnesses....

We need a maximum temperature limit for workers!

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is updating it's guidance on safe working temperatures. The guidance includes a minimum temperature, but not maximum temperature.

When…

1 in 5 people on UC and disability benefits used a food bank last month.

The Disability price tag is Β£1,095 a month.

The basic rates of UC don’t cover essentials.

The Hackney Green Party welcomes the long overdue judgment on the
assault on Child Q in 2020, an incident that continues to cast a long shadow
over our borough and our nation.
The dismissal of two Metropolitan Police officers for gross misconduct,
along with a final warning issued to a third, makes a significant step in
recognising the serious failings that took place. However, this does not go
far enough.
We are deeply concerned that the misconduct panel did not uphold the
Director General’s findings of racism and adultification, two deeply troubling
elements of the case that have been plainly identified and called out by the
community and those directly affected.

Hackney Green Party continues to stand in solidarity with Child Q and her
family. We commend the bravery and strength of Child Q’s family who refused
to be silenced or dismissed, and whose persistence made this outcome
possible.
This outcome must not mark the end of the process for accountability. We
support the calls for further legal and professional scrutiny of both the
officers and the school staff involved. No child should ever experience what
Child Q endured.
We remain committed to advocating for direly needed systemic change and
anti-racist education locally and nationally.
