Brand to ban: What young people really think about energy drinks Our warts-and-all account of what it's like to do public health research.

In this blog, the researchers share what the children told them - they aren’t passive consumers: they get marketing, branding & peer pressure, yet energy drinks remain part of their culture. Stronger policy, better education & youth input are key. ⬇️

New Fuse research @teessideuni.bsky.social reveals a concerning picture of how children in North East England perceive energy drinks. Over 80% of the 13–14-year-olds surveyed consume them - many several times a week - despite health risks and voluntary sales bans. ⬇️

A Mixed Method Study Exploring Children and Young People's Perception of Energy Drinks and Analysing Consumption Patterns

The findings are both revealing.
πŸ” Most of our participants reported consuming energy drinks.
🧠 Their choices were shaped by taste, image, peer influenceβ€”and a market that knows exactly how to speak to them. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Our latest paper explores a question that’s been quietly brewing in school corridors, corner shops, and online spaces: What do energy drinks mean to young people?
In this study, we listened to the voices of children & young people in North East Englandβ€”hearing not just what they consume, but why.

How weight-loss injections are making obesity a wealth issue With claims of a 'two-tier system', could it be that these drugs are exacerbating health inequalities?

By thinking we have a treatment for obesity we lose focus and stop thinking about the more difficult issues around the food industry and regulation, which are the root cause of this." @felly500.bsky.social , ADPH President
