@verizonofficial.bsky.social you run a fantastic FiOS service & a pretty good wireless service. But why are you incapable of allowing people to pay for both of them on a single account?

There should be some reasonable deadline for posing questions to allow enough time for people to propose answers to them, discuss those answers & vote on them in advance.

Somewhere between a few hours & a couple of days feels right to me.

Claim: the only useful reason to have a meeting is achieving consensus answers to open questions.

Any questions for which answers can be composed & agreed upon asynchronously before the meeting can be eliminated from discussion. If none remain then the meeting should be automatically cancelled.

The highlight of our visit to the Everglades was when a pod of 6 dolphins decided to race us. What made this unquestionably better than something like MarineWorld was that these dolphins were completely wild & free but chose to engage with us on their own terms because they wanted to have fun.

Apple innovation and execution โ€” Benedict Evans It matters that Appleโ€™s new Siri will be late, and it matters more that Apple didnโ€™t realise. Is it more than that?

Today I invented a fusion dish I call Spicy Sacrilege: take haleem, a dish Muslims typically eat to celebrate Eid, and add Goan pork sausage (chorizo) to it. It's yummy.

Despite the provocative title, this is easily one of the top few non-fiction books I have read in my life. Not only is it firmly grounded in science but the calibre of writing is absolutely top-notch: simultaneously clear, insightful & entertaining.

If research labs lose funding for several months we may never be able to resurrect them; it'll be like what we did to our manufacturing industry a couple of decades earlier.

We're on the cusp of destroying what was probably one of the very few remaining competitive advantage this country had left: our amazing collaboration on scientific research between academia & industry.

In every case, the uncontested partner was able to happily continue thriving into the next era, as it seems NVidia is very likely to do too.

There are 3rd wheels involved too. AMD tried to muscle out Intel and eventually succeeded in displacing them. Facebook tried the same thing with Google but that ended in a detente. This time we have Anthropic trying to displace OpenAI.

Each tech era seems to have a different power couple: a pair of corporations who own opposing sides of the coin of the realm. First was Microsoft & Intel, then Google & Apple, now it's OpenAI & NVidia.

this means that in another generation the value of labour relative to capital will rise again.

historically, the value of labour only went back up after horrible disasters massively reduced the labour supply; but young people have been responding by cannily reducing future labour supply by... not having kids;

Capitalism's tendency for the rich to get richer has boosted inequality, in particular making young people worse off relative to previous generations because the value of labour relative to capital has fallen; TRPF has pushed the rich to exploit labour even more;

I have a theory that ties together Marx's TRPF, rising inequality, & the aging population: people need to accumulate wealth as they get older because they won't be able to rely on their labour for income eventually;
