I remember The Great Japan Exhibition: Art of the Edo Period, at the Royal Academy back in 1981. One of the best I have seen in the UK of Japanese art and artefacts.

Remembering RICK BUCKLER (a key part of a band that will always occupy a key place in my life) - who left us a year ago today, aged 69.

Great shots. We were booked on the Waverley when she crashed into a dock up in Scotland, and had seen her a few times. Finally got the trip from Essex and up the Thames to Tower Bridge, a few years back.

Artists are cultural witnesses. Storytellers who turn quiet, fleeting moments or moments of global upheaval into records infused with emotion, perspective, & meaning, revealing how those moments felt.

Both mirror & memory, art reflects the world as it is while preserving how it was experienced.

Wonderful.

Saw "A Night with Dame Edna" at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End in 1978. First section was an intro from Sir Les Patterson, followed by Dame Edna with a silent 'Madge Allsop'. Screamingly funny. Barry had a razor sharp wit.

Really interesting (and difficult) challenges this week. Another worthy POTW .. but I did love the cavolo nero & the back story.

IMHO Remain in Light is a very powerful design, partly because of the (deliberately) crude digital manipulation to obscure the faces, but retain just enough of the characteristics of each member of the band.

Visited NYC in 1973 & 2023. Very different places.

Is there any city in the world where people would not complain about:
* Dirt
* Overcrowding
* Transport

Great that "Ken-san" was finally brought to western audiences by Robert Aldrich (Too Late The Hero), Sydney Pollack (The Yakuza) and Ridley Scott (Black Rain).

Our parents took us for B&B holidays to Ryde back in the 60's. I remember us getting sprayed with oil fumes as the old SRN hovercraft came in to land on the beach. Visited in 2023 and good to see a service still running.
Even took the giant old SRN4 to Calais once; on a choppy day!

The Isle of Wight, Round the Island race is an annual event, typically involving 1,200+ boats and 10,000+ sailors, over a 50-nautical-mile course. It is one of the largest such events in the world.

It is specifically in alignment with the sun’s solar angles on each September 11, from 8:46 am until 10.28am.

Memorial for the real J. Dawson (Joseph) at the Titanic section of Fairview Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Joseph Dawson was a fire trimmer aboard the Titanic. He appears on the 1901 census, living with his parents in Lower Rutland Street, Dublin.
150 victims were buried in Halifax.

My mum gave me my Claddagh ring, which was passed down to her many years ago. She was from a little village just outside Galway. It was almost completely worn away at the back (like this one) and I had it rebuilt and sized so I could wear it as my wedding ring.

A St Valentine's key amulet purchased in 1931 in Padua, Italy. Popularly recognised as the patron saint of love and marriage, Valentine was a Roman priest who was caught marrying couples and who was martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. He was executed on 14 February AD 269.
